Somewhere back in time it was likely used for both. Some of these baskets have smaller sewing baskets woven in sort of sitting on the ledge formed by the step out. I have seen pincushion baskets. Small open baskets perhaps to hold buttons etc and scissors case baskets added into this style basket. so these were frequently used to hold sewing items. Basket shown is 7" square on the bottom. Stepped up to 11" round diameter at top. 3.75" to top of rim, 5" to top of the"D-handles" also called"ear handles" Sides on this basket"step out about2" at mid rise. Made of brown ash splints, traditional basketry material of Maine Native American basketmakers, with a carved bentwood rim and notched carved bentwood handles(notched over the rim) The bentwood looks like oak to me The curls on this basket are"wart curls" or"periwinkle curls" a bit more elongated and slanting. where curlicue curls are round and unslanted. Vintage FISHING CREEL- Maine Indian made w/canvas webbing strap
Nice older fishing creel- Maine Indian made. This was most likely MicMac made- as the MicMacs made more utility baskets than"fancy" baskets in the 1880's-1950's. But- it could have been made by a Penobscot. Passamaquoddy or Maliseet as those tribes, while making a greater percentage of"fancy" baskets also made things such as fishing creels, pack baskets and other utility baskets. It is woven on a foundation of brown ash splints. The traditional basketry material of Maine and Eastern Canadian Indian basketmakers and comes with a khaki green canvas webbing strap- Buckle inside the creel, see it in last photo in slideshow. View all 7 pics to see side, back, bottom and creel open etc. Lid has rectangular hole woven into it and is attached with twine to the back of the creel. Front has crapped ring hlders, a round one ... moreon the creel, an oval one on the lid that fits over the one on the creel. Often a twig of just the right size and length would be used through the closure to keep creel shut. It is 11" across. 9" high and 7" at deepest. Likely older piece as those made in the 50's-80's often had plywood or thin cedar board lids and sometimes also had plywood or wood reinforced bottoms. This basket is in perfect condition. Set of 3 9" Plates William Hulme Maine Staffordshire England Transferware
These are 3 plates in what I assume are the Maine pattern made by William Hulme with a lovely blue transferware pattern. William Hulme used a very distinctive mark- see photos. The company is reported to be in business from 1891- 1936. But this confuses me. The plates bear no registry mark, which became mandatory in 1842. The plates are 9" wide. They are white with lovely floral pattern transfers. Issues: 1 plate vintage mint. With slight discoloration on the outer rim of the reverse side. 1 plate shows the same light discoloration on the front outer rim and has a small crack not visable on the front of the plate. 1 plate near mint with a small crack visable only on the back of the plate.All have age appropriate crazing. Vintage mint means as perfect as possible with prior use. No chips. Cracks or any defects except for the very most ... moreminor wear to wearable spots, like the bottoms of pieces. Please make sure to enlarge the photos. As they are an important part of the description of the item. I try very hard to note any and all defects, but being human, I may miss something. In pencil on the back is identified as Lincoln Maine, and there is what might be the right hand portion of a sign for Lincoln Clothing Co. on the far left. We are a smoke free home. Antique Maine Handwoven Split Willow Trout Creel w/ Metal & Leather Relief
I purchased this Creel in the Southwest Mountains of Maine two years ago. It is exceptionally well made with tightly woven Split Willow strands and in remarkable condition for its age of 100 years or more old. It is re-enforced with wider flat strands at the front. Backside and underside. The opening for inserting the catch is also re-enforced. The Latch starts with a eye hook pin through a Sun like designed leather washer re-enforced by a small metal washer outside and inside, the inside end of the eye pin bent to the sides to hold it onto the Creel. The fish clasp that fits over this I have seen online on several Antique Creels, but although it is obviously a logo, no one seems to know the Makers name. The clasp starts with a metal Fish head with raised features, then leather so it bends, then another metal piece which the eye loop fits ... morethrough, it being decorated with raised fins and scales. Then leather, then the metal Tail with raised decorations. It is in wonderful condition overall, only the original shoulder strap is missing. The backside of the Creel is contoured inward and curved to rest comfortably on a fisherman's side. It measures 8 inches tall by 11 inches long by 5 5/8 inches wide. Silver Plated Spoon with the picture of Captain Sigsbee at the top of the handle. Followed by the US Shield and an anchor and chain. The bowl of the spoon says: U.S. Battleship Maine” followed by an engraving of the Maine and then the words: Havana Harbor– February 15. 1898” On the back of the spoon are the words“Crown Silver Plate Co. This Bronze. Weighing just under 50 pounds, is housed in a large original period Mahogany shadow box frame with gold interior. the over-all weight of the the bronze framed is 60-65 pounds. Civil War Maine State Seal Coat Button- Dug Cold Harbor, Virginia
Dug in the vicinity of Cold Harbor. Virginia, this is a coat size Maine state seal button. Although it is not visible in the photo, the button still retains quite a bit of gilt on its' face in the low background"field" It serves to very nicely highlight the intricate features of the state seal itself. Unfortunately, this button is missing its' shank. It bears the backmark"EXTRA QUALITY. Cold Harbor was the site of two fierce battles, one in 1862, and the latter in 1864. This button would make a very nice addition to any collection.

For your consideration is this fabulous book by Peter P. Dalton entitled"With Our Faces to the Foe: A History of the 4th Maine Infantry in the War of the Rebellion" Written in 1998. With Our Faces to the Foe" is the story of the 4th Maine Infantry in the American Civil War. The book follows the regiment from its formation in Rockland, Maine in 1861 to its mustering out in 1864. The regiment fought at 1st& 2nd Bull Run, The 7 Days Campaign, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness suffering over 100 combat deaths. It has many pictures& maps with 385 pages. I have included a bookmark that was in the book when I purchased it"second-hand" It is in excellent condition, with no stains or torn or folded pages, spine is still perfect, but it is a pre-owned book. Two color red& blue. This poster is stamped in three places(U.S. Navy Recruiting Substation. Post Office Building, Augusta, Maine) This Navy 26” x 40” poster features art probably by Matt Murphey. Art direction by Barclay who served in the New York Recruiting Office. Designing posters over the next two and a half years that would become some of the Navy's most popular recruiting images of World War II. With the entrance of the United States into the war in 1941.
