Lord Hill is a wonderful collecting locale and it has a terrific view of the White Mountains! The microcline is fluorescent blue and the autunite veins are fluorescent green. Apparently the once existent veins of perthite have been altered into autunite(or at least affected by uranyl ions) creating an artistic fluorescent specimen* The green fluorescence may be from an isomorphous substitution of uranyl ions into the perthite lattice. Revolutionary War Large Canister Shot, Maine Battlefield
This large Canister Shot was found near the American Forces Lines on the Penobscot Expedition Battlefield in Castine. Maine. It apparently was fired from Fort George which was held by the British in 1779. It is 1 1/16 inches in diameter and shows the mold and sprue marks. It has been treated to prevent deterioration. Excellent Excavated Condition.

MAINE For auction is the Historical November 7th. 1889 Preliminary Design 10 inch Turret Mount U.S. Armored Steel Cruiser Maine Bureau of Ordinance Nov.7th 1889 Approved M. Sicard Chief of Bureau The Propelling Machinery and General Arrangements of the Engine room and Shaft alleys for the MAINE were approved by U.S.N. Engineer by Chief George W. Mellville on December 5th. 1887. Nearly two years later, Her 10" GUN TURRETS and MOUNTS were approved by U.S.N. Ordinance Bureau Chief M. Sicard(Montgomery Sicard) on November 7th. 1889. She was launched November 18th, 1889. Provenance and History: In 1881. Commander Montgomery Sicard became the Chief of Bureau of Ordnance for the United States Navy. He remained USN Chief of Bureau until 1890. In the period between ... more1881-1890 he was responsible for the Armament of all USN ships predating the Spanish American War. Before finalization and manufacture of armament, the Bureau Chief approved Photo-Litho Preliminary Designs to be provided by Issac Friedenwald Co. of Baltimore Maryland. After the preliminary designs were returned back to the USN as photo-lithos, most of them are known to be code marked with a Green stamp. At least one Preliminary Design Photo-Litho was not marked, being th is 11.5 x 29“ Sectional Elevation of the ten inch gun mounts for the U.S.S. Maine. Issac Friedenwald. Was a Publisher and Lithographer in Baltimore Maryland. The company was known for quality books, manuscripts documents and also for Photo Lithographs from as early as 1884 to as late as 1892. Here is a striking covered tureen in the Minute Man pattern from Boston& Maine Railroad. It has a strong stamped logo with the arrow through the"B" It is in great condition with no silver loss and should polish up like new. It was manufactured by Rogers Brothers and is marked"3/4 pts" I wish I had the matching ladle but this is still a fine piece. The Minuteman. 19th Century Scrapbook of Centenarians Kept by Two Generations of Maine Men
This is a great scrapbook that covers compiled between the 1840s and 1876 by two Maine Maine. An uncle(1840s-1873) and his nephew(the last few years) John Hannibal Sheppard(1789-1873) began the scrapbook. His nephew Joseph Wood completed the entries. John Hannibal Sheppard was born 17 March 1789 Cirencester. England. The Sheppard family came to the U.S. in 1791 and settled at Hallowell, ME. He attended Hallowell Academy and started at Harvard but left in 1806 to enter law firm of Wilde& Bond. He was admitted to the bar in 1810. John removed to Boston in 1841. He was librarian of New England Historic Genealogical Society(NEHGS) from 1861-1869 and became a life member in 1866. He died 25 June 1873. Sheppard authored several historical and biographical works on prominent New Englanders. The scrapbook contains items on a variety of topics. ... moreBut its main focus is on Centenarians- it contains lots o ancecodotes, short newpaper snippets about the lives of centenarians, death notices, a few lists of centenarians Sheppard copied from vairous places and the like. He drew from New England papers primarily. He annotated a few of the notices, for example this one for Mr.s Ann Rumsey, who died at 103 years of age- Captain Cook's Daughter. He occasionally copied notices from papers from outside New England or even the country. For example, the notice of"Signor Gulmini, the first Tenor of Italy and Leader of the Band of Pople Benedict the XIV" who supposedly lived to be 138. There are also a few notes from a subsequent owner, Francis O'Brien of Portland, Maine, who wrote on a short article about the 100th birthday of Elias Thomas of Portland, noting that Thomas's birthplace"destroyed by Mowatt in 1775" and that Thomas"Lived to see Portland Destroyed by Fire of 1866. Just a great colleciton of notes, short articles and information about centenarians throughout the biggest part of the 19th century. After Sheppard died in 1873. Description When we cleaned out my friend's father's estate last year we found hidden under his work bench this interesting handcarved round sculpture that I think may have been part of a door at one time. May have come from a piece of furniture. It's an attractive piece and would look nice framed and hung or put back into a piece of furniture. The piece is approximately 14" in diameter and weighs about 3.3lbs. Thickness is approximately 1 1/2" Appears to be made of hardwood and. If I had to venture a quess, I would say oak. It has an old varnish on it, which stops about 1/2" from the edge, which convinces me it was part of a piece of furniture or door. I don't see any cracks or broken pieces to the carving, just some normal wear to some edges. Overall, an interesting piece that I'm sure you can find a use ... morefor.
