About Panama Baskets Have you ever wondered just where something came from that you bought? You'll really appreciate these baskets after you've read the following and viewed all the photos. The Wounaan and Embera people from the rainforest in Darien province of Panama are master artisans. The women are well known for their fine baskets and the men for their cocobolo wood and tagua carvings. The baskets are hand woven using natural fibers found in the forest. A variety of reeds and palm fibers are normally used. Chunga. The fiber of the black palm, is the fiber of choice among the weavers. The colors are produced with natural extracts of ... moreplants and earth, using the traditional methods for dyeing basket fibers. Seldom, if ever, are two baskets alike. The original designs usually portray life in the village. Local animals and insects, or plant life. Income earned from the sale of these lovely baskets reduces the need to destroy the rainforest for agriculture. February 2007. Darien Province, Panama- We just finished witnessing a graduation ceremony where a number of Wounaan women had completed a 30-day course on how to make better baskets. This particular course zeroed in on both quality and using color. The teacher's name was Milda Membora. The little girls shown behind the table of baskets worked with their mothers during the class and got up to do a for us. During the ceremony. Each woman came up, held their basket, and stood next to their daughter to have their photo taken. This original handkerchief is in excellent condition, actually in my opinion near mint with only one small spot readily noticeable appearing near the top left region of the handkerchief. A real neat piece of old San Francisco memorabilia from 1915. Beautifully professionally framed in an original period wood frame. I have for sale a medal from Sweden that commemorated the participation of Sweden and the Swedish-Americans at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition that was held in San Francisco. California. This medal is bronze, it is 1 1/4 inch in diameter and in XF to AU condition. The medalist was George Larson. The obverse shows the figure of Pallas, goddess of wisdom, crowning the symbolic figures of science and labor. At the rim it has the motto ARBETET ADLAR which means Honoring Labor. 1915 Sepiatone Collection of the PPIE /Panama Pacific International Exposition
Fresh from the estate of a Florida antique dealer. This is a rare opportunity to obtain a set of 25 sepiatones of the Panama Pacific International Exposition. This is a unique view at the exhibition from the perspective of a talented photographer/artist. The photos are mounted on olive colored photo album paper and bound in a book like form. The photos are all in very good condition, except for the panoramic view which has a crease in the middle where the page is folded(it was intended this way) The outside cover is fully dated and marked as the official publication. The corners and edges of the book are larger than the pages and have creased and have several small tears. None of these affect the photographs. Auction records for sepiatones average $100 a photograph, with many going higher, depending on subject. Sepiatones or silver photographs ... moreare rare as they used a developing fluid containing silver oxide. This process was highly toxic and has been abandoned long ago. The resulting photographs are highly prized because of their archival quality and clarity. These images are as clear as if they were taken a month ago. Notice how the Golden Gate Bridge is missing from the last full panoramic image! The book is produced by Robert Reid. The same artist who made the 8 murals in the dome of the Palace of Fine Arts, which still stands today(the murals were replaced by WPA artists during the second WW)

OFFICIAL MINIATURE VIEW BOOK- PANAMA PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION(OVER 150 VIEWS) This classic 64 page booklet is loaded with over 150 views of the famous Panama Pacific International Exposition held in San Francisco- 1915. The Panama-Pacific International Exposition(PPIE) was a world's fair held in San Francisco. In the United States, between February 20 and December 4 in 1915. Its ostensible purpose was to celebrate the completion of the Panama Canal, but it was widely seen in the city as an opportunity to showcase its recovery from the 1906 earthquake. The fair was constructed on a 635 acre site in San Francisco, along the northern shore now known as the Marina. Among the exhibits at the Exposition was the C. P. Huntington. The first steam locomotive purchased by Southern Pacific Railroad; the locomotive ... moreis now on static display at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. A telephone line was also established to New York so people across the continent could hear the Pacific Ocean. The Liberty Bell traveled by train on a nationwide tour to and from Pennsylvania to attend the exposition. After that trip, the Liberty Bell returned to Pennsylvania, and has not been moved since.1] The centerpiece was the Tower of Jewels. Which rose to 435 feet and was covered with over 100,000 cut glass Novagems. The 3⁄4 to 2 inch colored"gems" sparkled in sunlight throughout the day and were illuminated by over 50 powerful electrical searchlights at night. In front of the Tower. The Fountain of Energy flowed at the center of the South Gardens, flanked by the Palace of Horticulture on the west and the Festival Hall to the east. The arch of the Tower served as the gateway to the Court of the Universe, leading to the Court of the Four Seasons to the west and the Court of Abundance to the east.
