Also known as Beauceware(trademark) became an important part of the great industrial adventure of Beauce County, in Quebec country. Established in the first half of the century in 1939, and operating until 1989, the company diffused an innovative image by establishing the production of an industrialized utilitarian art: pottery. The ceramic products of Beauce transgressed the local market place and quickly reached the Canadian. American and European markets. The Ceramics of Beauce Inc remains a striking example of the resounding evolution of the Beauce"entrepreneurship" ... moreventure. This"turn"powered with feet. Was used at the begining of the venture to create the hand made pieces, with red earth. In 1975, master ceramist artist, Antoine Jacques. Re-open a department to continue the old traditionnal way to create master pieces. The"old turn" began a new career! If you are lucky. You could find hand made mural plates with his signature. Paradoxically. One of the reasons to start the venture of Ceramics of Beauce was to maintain the agricultural vocation of the county. The target was to stop the rural migration of the young tradesmen towards the great industrial centers and solve the thorny unemployment problem. J.W. Marceau, a local agronomist from Beauceville, was anxious and concerned with this problem. He had become interested in the layer of silica found at the site of‘Gustin Pierrot’s mine” which was located on the land of Mr. Gédéon Doyon's, in Saint-Joseph. Clay samples were taken from the site and sent for analysis to the Agriculture ministry. Here we have a milk bottle or vase that was made by Beauce. From Quebec, Canada. An interesting piece, I'm not sure if it is indeed a milk bottle or if it is just a vase shaped like one.There are blue, red and yellow polka scattered along the outside. It measures just under 10" tall and is about 3 1/2" across the widest point of the middle. It is in excellent gently pre-owned condition. Free of any chips, nicks or cracks from what I can see. There is a bit of wear to the color of a few of the polka dots. It is marked with the"cb" symbol of Beauce and"Canada 4239" on the bottom. The colours are a light brown blend that flows down over a blue underglaze. Condition is very good. No chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. There is a manufacturing flaw to the top rim under the glaze(see pics) Bottom has incised signature type marks that seem to be a"C" with a dot(Cartier? See Pics. In good condition except for the two barely visible fleebites as seen in the pictures and mentioned here for accuracy sake. Measuring 5 1/4" tall and approximately 6 1/4" long. Eva born in 1944 and Milan born in 1942 in Czech Republic immigrated to Montréal. Québec in 1968 diploma in ceramics. Sculpture and design from the College of Arts and Crafts, Brno, Czech Republic(1959-1963) As artists and husband and wife. The Lapkas work closely together on ceramic projects. Eva is responsible for the form of the figures, Milan for the glazes and firing. Large EARLY TANKARD from Port Neuf Quebec, Canada
This is a Large Tankard that my wife purchased in 2003 from Canada. It came to her via Canada and was reported to be from Port Neuf Quebec Canada. It is ~4 1/2" in diameter x 5 9/16" tall and has foliate terminals on the handle with a green band around the top rim where it is slightly cut in there also. The green circular pattern repeats itself around the entire Tankard. There are previous repairs to the handle. Staining, the expected wear, aging, and crazing and several hairline cracks that are visible in the photos.
