With prominent central mid rib and long, elegant tang with a triangular recess a third of the way down its length, designed for insertion into a wooden pole in antiquity, now long since perished. I've give it a clean and unwittingly rubbed most of the printing off the handle but the imprint can still be seen as Spear& Jackson whilst an emblem is on one of the rivets as a Crown and letter SJ and a Rosette. New Mexico ANTIQUE Dug Up Iron Indian Spear Lance point 1850
I have a good friend who is a serious metal detecting enthusiast. He covers a lot of the remote areas of northern New Mexico looking for iron relics. This hand forged iron Indian spear point is overall 13 1/2” long and almost 1/4” thick at the shaft. It was found in an old Indian camp on the Canadian River near Springer. New Mexico about 5 years ago. Good camp sites, one used a 150 years ago are still good spots today. That’s how you locate these places. Then you hope you get lucky. I'd guess it dates to the mid 1800s, no markings. Indians acquired these points as trade items. Typically. River crossings are always problematic and a spot horsemen are always loosing stuff, still do today. I expect some poor Indian had a horse blow up on the bank as he was coming out, maybe it was steep or too slippery and the fellow dropped the lance or ... morethe iron point may or been loose and just dropped off the shaft. HAND MADE This Diego Gonzalez's superb rendition of a very old design that depicts Kuna men spear fishing within a giant net. The workmanship is exquisite. The stitches are almost invisible and the lines are very narrow and even. The net is outlined in a very pointed sawtooth stitch with lines and channels completed to perfection. The net is decorated with pointed rectangular strips of fabric in many colors. Each point is separated by a triangle. Next to each spear fisherman inside the net is a white roll of cord. Made of the tiniest of chain stitches. Embroidery is placed strategically to enhance the mola triangles fill the areas around the sides and top. The work on this mola is as good as I have ever seen. If not the best. There is so much to explore in this mola that I am still finding new things as I describe it to you today. The ... moreway he made the fingers on the hands holding the spears is fascinating. I had thought they satin stitched but I see today that they are done with fabric. He is a true artist. The mola is 16" x 12.5" and has three layers. The bottom of which is ottomano. It was worn on a blouse. His molas were always worn by one of his sisters or nieces. It was made in 1999, in my opinion one of his best years. I sometimes forget to state that my molas are hand made and what the quality of the stitching is. That is because they are all hand made and the quality of the stitching is always above average. The reason that I was attracted to molas back in the 60s was the stitching.
