EUROPEAN STONE AGE ARTIFACTS BY PALATINA AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED Description of the Homo Neanderthalensis- the Neanderthal( Neandertal) men from the Mousterian phase about 40.000- 60.000 years ago. It is most likely a flat trimmed spear head! The Mousterian industry appeared around 200.000 years ago and persisted until about 40,000 years ago, in much the same areas of Europe, the Near East and Africa where Acheulean tools appear. In Europe these tools are most closely associated with Homo neanderthalensis, but elsewhere were made by both Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens. Mousterian tools required a preliminary shaping of the stone core from which the actual blade is struck off. The toolmakers either shaped a rock into a rounded surface before striking off the raised area as a wedge shaped flake(see photo at left) or they shaped the core ... moreas a long prism of stone before striking off triangular flakes from its length, like slices from a baguette. Because Mousterian tools were conceived as refinements on a few distinct core shapes, the whole process of making tools had standardized into explicit stages(basic core stone, rough blank, refined final tool) Variations in tool shapes could be produced by changes in the procedures at any stage. A consistent manufacturing goal was to increase as much as possible the cutting area on each blade. Though this made the toolmaking process more labor intensive, it also meant the edges of the tools could be reshaped or sharpened as they dulled, so that each tool lasted longer. The whole toolmaking industry had adapted to get the maximum utility from the labor invested at each step. Tool forms in the Mousterian industry display a wide range of specialized shapes. Cutting tools include notched flakes, denticulate(serrated) flakes, and flake blades similar to Upper Paleolithic tools. The collector was a hobby archeologist and went on many digs throughout the U.S. and has been featured in quite a few articles for his collection. The majority of his collection was dug in the Burlington County area along the Delaware River banks and/or the farmlands of Birmingham NJ which was the home of many Lenape Indians for more than 400 yrs. The Lenape were native to N.J. PA. N.Y. DE. and MD, until the tribe was blended with the Nanticoke Indians which then spanned most of the east coast and as far west as Oklahoma. RARE OLD DAYAK BLOWGUN SPEAR FROM BORNEO NO KERIS DAGGER MANDAU SWORD
Being offered is a nice old antique Borneo blowgun spear. It measures 76 1/2" in total length and the blade at top is 6" The shaft is a black hardwood with the entire center channeled out bottom to top. A dart could be positioned and then shot from the shaft. The blade is recessed at the top. In other words it isn't fitted to the center of the pole but rather to the back of the pole and then wrapped in rattan. The rattan wrap is very nicely done. Nice old sumpitan. The piece shows nice old patina. Probably dates to the turn of the century to early 20th century. This spear is the bottom spear pictured in the grouping of 3 spears. This is a replica of an ancient spear thrower from the archaeological site of Bruniquel in France. This is one of the most famous spear throwers in the world. And it is from the Magdalenian period of the Upper Paleolithic, dating between12,000 and 17,000 years old. It is new from the museum replica company Occoquan Paleotechnics LLC, and is a great collectable for Paleolithic Art enthusiasts. The original was made in reindeer antler and is an example of one of the earliest spear throwers in the world. This replica was carved in modern epoxy which is much stronger than the plaster casts of the previous generation. It was made after being inspired by our recent trip to France to see the atlatls from the archaeological sites in caves there.
