Old Storm King Lamps/Torches 427 Shanklin Mfg. Co, Mining, Highway, Railroad???
Hi! I am out of my realm of knowledge and so will describe this item to the best of my ability(and apologize beforehand)Up for auction is this set of three Storm King#427 kerosene/oil lamps/torches made by the Shanklin Manufacturing Company in Springfield. Illinois-they are housed in their original metal bracket. I am unsure if they were used in coal mines or as utility torches for highways/streets or for the railroad. I could glean little from the internet. Shanklin, the maker, also manufactured mining lights and accessories. Another site I looked at said they were"utility torch burners" for streets. From what I've read, I believe they were made sometime in the 1920-30's. While looking at examples of old mining lights and torches, I didn't see any others even similar to them. I purchased them from a man who bought them ... moreat an auction-he said they were mining lights. Anything mine-related here in West Virginia is highly collectible, so I thought someone would like to add them to their collection. I think what makes them rare and unique(EBay discourages sellers from using such words) is the fact that the set of three lamps and the bracket have all remained together. The containers retain a small amount of red paint-rust and metal show through the bare spots. Storm King 427" is stamped on each torch container. There is also a"Fill Line" Leak-proof" is also stamped on the container. There is a thick seam/lip that runs around the middle of each one. On the top of each container is a little top where the wick is housed. Wick Line" is stamped on the metal. The bottom of each container has a hole inside so that they can be stacked on top of one another. They each measure approximately 4" high and are about 17" in diameter. The black metal bracket has factory holes on the back so that it can be mounted. It features two"arms" with springs in the middle and a small hook at the end. COPPER FUEL CANTEEN for SIGNAL CORPS NIGHT TORCHES
One of the rarest Civil War canteens is the copper and brass Signal Corps turpentine canteen for adding fuel to night signal torches. An identical canteen is pictured in a line drawing on page 400 of American Military Equipage. 1851-1872 by Frederick Todd. In that drawing it shows a Civil War Signalman filling a torch with an identical canteen. For your convenience I have scanned that page and included it here. This identical canteen is also pictured on page 88 in the photograph of a signal corps officer in Civil War Canteens by Stephen Sylvia and Michael J. O'Donnell. Once again I have scanned that page and included it here. This is a large canteen made entirely of copper with the exception of a brass threaded top attached to a brass chain. The use of brass and copper was done so that it would not throw sparks. The canteen stands 13" ... morehigh at the spout. 10" across and 3-1/2" wide. It is in excellent condition with all soldered seams tight and as you can see, it has a beautiful mellow patina overall. It has the usual bumps and dents from actual field use. It has only three strap loops with one missing and has a good sized remnant of the original hand sewn fabric shoulder strap. Unfortunately the buckle is long gone. And two nicely worked rams' heads, one on either side of the pot, well bolted in. The pot is all hand painted on a white background with garlands of roses and sprigs of pink and blue flowers including blue forget-me-nots. And blue ribbons. Very low auction priced. Original 1920-1940s complete set of 3 Bolser T-3 emergency smudge pots and it`s storage stack rack. Other then normal minimal age. Some rusty areas, I see no dents, dings or other damage. Early road emergency/work kerosene pots. I don`t think these were ever used looking at the"new" condition of the wicks, the fact of no carbon residue on any of the pots or the wicks and wick caps. One pot had some kerosene in it, which I emptied out. The storage rack holds them securely in place with the screw down handle. The Rack and Pots need or can use a re-painting. Excellent Originals. CUTTING TORCHES VICTOR CA1060 One is a newer Victor CA1060 head with an older body Victor 315. I have not used it but the controls all work and have resistance as the ones I used in the past. Other than the two tubes on the head and the lever it is all brass and weighs 3.5 pounds. US GOVT The older torch is marked US GOVT it also has the number“4” and“3” as well as a possible serial number“63140” Overall length is 20 inches made of ALL BRASS and weighs 3.3 pounds. Old Storm King Lamps/Torches 427 Shanklin Mfg. Co, w/ Bracket, Highway/Trucks
Hi! I have listed this set of lamps/torches previously and was unsure of their purpose. But thanks to 4cats777, I now know they were used as highway/truck safety torches from the 1920's through the 1950's and possibly into the 60's( They are Storm King#427 kerosene/oil lamps/torches made by the Shanklin Manufacturing Company in Springfield, Illinois-they are housed in their original metal bracket. According to my source, 4cats777, they were lit during hours of darkness and were later replaced by reflective warning triangles. In daylight hours, instead of burning the lamp, a warning flag would have been posted on each lamp I think what makes them rare and unique(EBay discourages sellers from using such words) is the fact that the set of three lamps and the bracket have all remained together. The containers retain a small amount ... moreof red paint-rust and metal show through the bare spots. Storm King 427" is stamped on each torch container. There is also a"Fill Line" Leak-proof" is also stamped on the container. There is a thick seam/lip that runs around the middle of each one. On the top of each container is a little top where the wick is housed. Wick Line" is stamped on the metal. The bottom of each container has a hole inside so that they can be stacked on top of one another. They each measure approximately 4" high and are about 17" in diameter. The black metal bracket has factory holes on the back so that it can be mounted. It features two"arms" with springs in the middle and a small hook at the end. When pulled down, the hook fits over the lip on the bottom container and is secured. The entire unit is approximately 15-15 1/2" high; it weighs 8 1/2 pounds. As the photos show, there's plenty of rust. I think it's a great piece of transportation memorabilia whether restored or left in its present"as found" condition.
