They are tall and ... morenarrow reels. Penn introduced the style in the late 1930's with a three reel series numbered 249. 149 ad 49. They were introduced as Deep Sea Fishing reel with a side use for Deep Water wire line trolling for Salmon or Dee Sea bottom fishing. This style reel soon developed a large following but needed an upgrade to compete in style of fishing it was aiming at, namely big game fishing. A new reel was needed and in 1957, for the company's 25th Anniversary, Penn introduced the highly improved Penn 349 in four versions. The reel offered in this listing is one of those versions. The reel you see in the pictures is a vintage. Black side plate Model 349H. The"H" after the model number mean high speed retrieve ratio, 3 1/4 to 1. I have included in the picture section the page scanned from the Penn1957 catalog mentioning all the specs and upgrades of the Model 349. This reel was the full evolution of the tall and narrow Deep Sea Reels. Basically the upgrades that create the 349 are two position power handle, one piece bronze spool, six screw stand, convertable drag in the"C" version, steel gears and external drags for servicing of drags without breaking down the reel. The reel pictured here is the reel the winner will receive. It is used. The side plates have no cracks or chips but the reel does have some scratches. It is a very presentable reel that has been taken down, cleaned, all internal parts checked, lubed, assembled and adjusted. It runs smooth, strong and fast.
