And after multiple years of suggestions, pleading, and begging, Tiburon Engineering finally broke down and came up with a Newell 229 reel frame, model number N229. This frame will allow you to use braided spectra line on your Newell 229 without fear of the graphite base cracking or the three-piece frame warping. This also tightens up the tolerances between the inner ring and the spool(proper bearing adjustment still required) and also aligns the bearings better for freespooling/casting purposes. Unfortunately. This frame will NOT WORK with later C-series and early S-series 229 reels that have a"through-the-frame" design. You can tell if your Newell 229 fits this description by removing the sideplates. Another indicator is if your 229 has metal bearing cups on both the handle and clicker side. The generations of Newell 229 that this frame will work on include: G229 P229"no letter" 229 early generation C229 Valley Manufacturing(Sun Valley) S229-3.6. S229-5 This black frame was Type-II hard-anodized for maximal corrosion protection. But please be certain to grease all the screws and inner rings prior to installation with either Cal's drag grease or Daiwa blue marine grease! If you install this frame without grease, you will see corrosion by the end of the day guaranteed. This is what happens when stainless, aluminum, and salt interact in the same element(i.e. the ocean) and it is a similar concoction to battery acid. Penn Jigmaster 500 New Newell Aluminum Bars/ Base/Clamp-Excellent Tuna Reel
A custom built Penn Jigmaster 500 reel with new Newell aluminum bars.Base and clamp. Side plates are clean, no chips or cracks.Does have a 1 very light scratch about 1/4" long on left side plate. Maroon side plates and Penn light weight spool, recently spooled with new 15 lb.Yo-Zuri Flourocarbon fishing line. New red swirl 24-66 reel handle. Super clean inside and out. Strong clicker, free spools excellent for casting or jigging, recently replaced Penn HT-100 drags, all of the chrome in excellent condition like new. All internal Parts been hand polished for smoother operation and completely lubed. Very nice tuna reel. You will not be disappointed with this reel at all. Used Newell Parts - P 235 F - Aluminum Base and Bars
Used set of Newell aluminum base and bars off of an original P235F reel. They are not in perfect shape because of use. But they are still in real great condition. All screw holes were previously greased and were fully functional. There is some slight wear on the reel base foot, but very minor. I would personally consider this cosmetic. The reel seat still has plenty of life and the foot is still strong for continued use. Please examine all pictures carefully and make your own judgment on the condition. These are the exact parts you will receive. This set of base and bars can be used as a replacement for your 235. Or use them to extend any 200 series reel to the 235 width. I believe this is also similar to a P338 base and bars, so you could also use them to upgrade your 300 series with aluminum parts to a 338 width. Width of the reel between the sideplates is 2 7/16" The typical top bar and other cross bar has been replaced with what I believe are NEWELL aluminum ones. I replaced the chrome rod clamp with a modern plastic/graphite one. For all of you Penn collectors. The serial number on this is H781298. Everything works fine and I had this one professionally serviced a couple years ago. Fished once since then but rinsed well, sprayed with wd-40 and drags backed off just after. Great reel for Spectra!
