Set 3 Indian Hand Made & Sewn Leather Nightcrawler Leech Lure - North Central US
How fun are these? Indian made and hailing from the north-central US States(Minnesota. Wisconsin, Michigan) these old, vintage"lures" are occasionally found in the field by tackle collectors from this region. What they are intended to simulate is either a live leech or night crawler/ worm. Typically, they are made of hand cut and hand sewn leather. Most have an internal partial or full"wire" that can be"bent" with ones hands to simulate struggling, live worms or leeches. Many are quite old and have wonderful character. If you look closely at the"top" one, it has both original thread? and was later"repaired" by re-sewing with a fine natural(rope? thread. Quite interesting and unique. These would save the Indian's time in raising or finding live worms or leeches. To fish it, the fisherman ... moresimply added a fish hook of appropriate size. Depending upon the interest in this auction, I will consider selling more from my Indian made tackle collection. These vintage hand crafted Indian-made fishing tackle pieces are great conversation starters for a vintage fish hook or Indian made collection. Welcome to my auction for this very interesting medical set- an Antique Leech Tube and Bowl. A bit about leeches from a website: T he practice of bleeding whilst common. Was not done indiscriminately. 18th and 19th century physicians held great store by the correct application of leeches in different circumstances, for different conditions. So for example the number of leeches and the method and site of application would be different when treating an iritis than it would be for pelvic pain. Leeches could be directed to small areas such as the mouth, eyes, ear, or vagina, by placing them in a small receptacle called a“leech tube” Despite being used frequently, perhaps because of their unremarkable appearance and fragility, few have survived. The tube is about 4" long and the bowl stands about 2-1/2" high. The bowl has a rough pontil. ... moreBoth of these items have stickers from the previous owner's indexing. An important biography of this noted and beloved artist. Who illustrated all 5 of Dickens' Christmas Tales, and contributed close to 3000 drawings to England's PUNCH magazine! Very entertaining reading here! CONDITION: Bindings seem firm. But the signatures open right up to the gutters; not a result of bad handling or use, just the way the books were bound, with very little in the way of strengthening on the spines. Texts are clean and neat, with NO foxings and just ... morea hint of edgetoning. Inner joints split. COVERS are fairly clean, but we see scattered nits, spots& bubbles. Spines are all there, with wear to the extremes, and tiny splits in the"crimpings" Tips show obvious wear and bumping. For what it's worth. We find that a great percentage of other sets available on the market show a range of faults very similar to our set; it's not just a matter of lesser production values in the bindings, it's that most copies appear to have been read to death! The style, which was also very popular in earrings, is known as a“leech” style for obvious reasons. As you can see(with some difficulty) the surface of the bracelet bears a fairly complex series of punch dot style decorative lines running parallel with the circumference on both sides of the bracelet. The bracelet is fairly large and would fit a lady of slim to medium build, or a man of very slender build, and with that caveat, is completely and eminently wearable. The bracelet was recovered unbroken and intact. As is ordinarily the case. The artifact exhibits some substantial porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in earth) Unlike so many smaller bronze artifacts which are completely destroyed by corrosion, this particular piece is still intact. However it clearly spent almost two thousand years in fairly corrosive soil conditions. You can see how corrosion/oxidation has sculpted the metal into a series of shallow scallops. The effect is not unappealing– it looks quite a bit like the nugget style bracelets which were so wildly popular in the USA in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Despite the

Very nice Civil War Reenactment Sword CS in hilt - Resembles Leech & Rigdon (7)
This is a very nice Civil War reenactment sword. The hilt is more dainty than on most of the others I am listing today. The blade is has no marks but is quite shiny with slight incidences of rust which could probably be buffed out easily. The hilt is embellished with roses. Etc. and would remind you of a Leech and Rigdon. It also has"CS" molded into it. It was made in India which is marked on the drag. Brass and Brown Leather hilt. 42" Long. This outstanding. Authentic leech jar is made of fine German porcelain. It was made for the American market and sold through the Peter Van Schaak and Sons catalog, a leading supplier to druggists for many years. It dates to c1900. It is 7.5" tall and 4.5" in diameter, not including the knobs. The knobs were used as string ties to hold the little critters in. Notice the breathing holes in the lid. Offered here is the First Edition of Surtees satirical look at Victorian society in Ask Mamma as Jorrocks has many hurdles besides equestrian ones to overcome in his pursuit of a happy ending. Title page reads: Ask Mamma– or– The Richest Commoner in England by the Author of Handley Cross. Sponge’s Sporting Tours Etc. With Illustrations by John Leech– Published by Bradbury and Evans, London 1858. The author not named was Robert Smith Surtees(1803-1864) who in 1831 started New Sporting magazine and where he developed the humorous character of Mr. John Jorrocks. There are 13 wonderful full page color steel engravings by John Leech(1817– 1864) the noted caricaturist and illustrator throughout and including the frontispiece. There are also half page and small black and white illustrations throughout. This 412 page. 9 by 5 and a half inch hardcover ... moreis in good condition. Most text pages are clear. There is some spotting of the title page and in some of the edge margins. There is browning of pages 162 and 163 caused by a laid-in newspaper article. The red cloth and leather cover with gold gilt spine title and 5 raised bands has some wear along the edges; more so at the top and bottom of the spine. Lot of 4 vintage small goldfish bowls. One reads"FROM THE REXALL STORE+trade mark" It is approx 4 inches tall by by 6 1/2 inches wide. I have seen these advertised as leech bowls or goldfish bowls and dated anywhere from the early 1900's to the 1950's. I'm guessing the 1950's is correct. There is another similarly sized and shaped bowl without any writting on it. The other two are typical small old goldfish bowls. Approx 5 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches deep. Ojibwe Ojibway Indian Beaded Sweet Potato Moccasins Native American Leech Lake
Here are beautiful ly made Ojibwe Native American Beaded Moose Hide Moccasins. These are contemporary but made in the traditional style with puckered toe and velvet fabric for the beadwork and tongue of each moccasin. The interior is finished in a satiny material. Beautiful blue and yellow flower beaded designs on each moccasin. The moose hide is soft and pliable. Sturdy moccasins for dancing or display. They measure 9 1/2" from heel to point of toe. So approx a woman's size 6 or 7. I wear a 7 and they fit me snugly in the toe. These came from an auction of many beadwork items. Most from Minnesota Ojibwe(Leech Lake and Red Lake) collected by one person over 40 years. Some were signed but these were not. Similar beadwork was identified as made by Roxanne Cloud, various members of the Dunn Family, as well as some pieces by the renowned ... morequill and beadwork artist, Melvin Losh. VINTAGE BAIT MINNOW LEECH BUCKET UNKNOWN PAIL METAL GALVANIZED WITH SCREEN WIRE
This is a vintage bait bucket. Not sure what brand it is or exactly what it is supposed to carry. Unlike most old minnow buckets. This one is very shallow on the inside. The bottom is indented approx. 2 1/2" This leaves only approx. 3 1/2" depth for the inner area of bucket. The inner lid on the underside has a bubbled out hollow area so perhaps it floats. Based on the wide lip of the top I don't think this had an outer solid bucket. I've collected minnow buckets for many years and this is the first of it's kind I have seen. The wire mesh surrounding the pail is odd as well. Maybe it is a leech bucket? Surely someone knows what this is. If it doesn't sell I am going to make a light out of it! It is very solid and heavy and nearly rust free. Have a look, maybe you want it.
