Jr. 1926-2012) Sam graduated as salutatorian from East Providence High School.Class of 1943. Upon graduation he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II(1944-1946) as a Radioman 2nd Class aboard the LST 223. He then graduated from Rhode Island State College(now University of Rhode Island) in 1950 where he was a 1st Lt. in the Reserve Officers Training Corps and a brother of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. As a member of the Boy Scouts of America. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and years later presented his Eagle pin to his grandson, Andrew. London& Paris made this graceful cast iron machine in the 19th Century. The patent dates on the sewing platform run from"Jun 27-71" to"April 17-83. The wheel is stiff. But does turn- and could use an oiling to make it work more smoothly. The needle moves up and down, the presser foot reaching to meet it. A lever in the platform rotates the stitch gauge to determine the length of stitches. Characteristally of this make. The spool holder positions the thread spool at an angle. Some of the gold vine decoration remains. And some has worn off. A good ... morecleaning and oiling will bring out its antique glory. This is a beautiful Antique 1893 Willcox Gibbs sewing machine. Ser. No. A566304 that I have restored. All old paint was removed and repainted with black paint and after new decals where put on it was sprayed with clear to seal and protect the new decals. All parts where cleaned and inspected and found in very good condition. The nickel plated parts where polished. It sews a good stitch and works easy.This will be a good one to add to your collection.

1898 Antique Willcox & Gibbs Coffin Top Treadle Chainstitch Sewing Machine Nice!
This is an antique Willcox& Gibbs"Coffin Top" treadle chain stitch sewing machine in excellent running condition. It appears to be all original with the exception of one wheel on the front right metal base. The sewing machine runs smoothly and still has most of its' gold decals and original factory gloss finish intact. There is very little paint loss and it has it has the beautiful scalloped base. The serial number B543826 dates it to 1898. Included is the key. Needle wrench, a sample of its' stitching and a reprint of the owner's manual and directions. Intricate Old Cast Iron Lawrence Stein ANITA Wilcox Gibbs Style Sewing Machine
This auction is for an old cast iron sewing machine in the style of Wilcox& Gibbs. But it has a tag on it that reads Lawrence M. Stein Chicago. It has the name ANITA stenciled on it, and the letter B stenciled as well. The brass tag looks to have the letters H Co. on it, but I may be mistaken. This looks to be complete, and has a lot of moving parts, and everything seems to move freely. It measures approx. 8 3/4" long, 6" wide with all of its parts, and 8 3/4" tall at its tallest point. The machine was made in New York and shipped to England where the wooden base and handcrank were added. Only the british version of this machine was fitted with a handcrank. I am the 4th generation in my family to have used this lovely chain-stitch sewing machine for beautiful. Fine sewing. It comes with numerous attachments, needles, foot pedal& user’s manual& more. Having done some research, some of which was contacting Wilcox& Gibbs, I found that based on the serial number of this machine, it is estimated to have been manufactured in approximately 1909. It was originally sold as a hand turned machine and the motor is believed to have been added at a later date. I was able to get a copy of the User Manual from Wilcox and Gibbs, as well as an article about it from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. and a 10 page article on James A. Gibbs that appeared in the Virginia Cavalcade, all of which I will include. Condition: Used, but in very good condition for its age. This Beautiful Vintage Willcox& Gibbs Sewing Machine is in good condition considering its age. The serial number(photo 9) A691431 dates it to around 1912. According to the formulas on the web site sewalot.com. The needle moves very smoothly when actuated with the fly wheel, I don't know how to sew, but everything seems to operate properly. The machine is all original, with the expected chips& skuffs, decals are in good condition with some voids. The cloth plate Is bright with very little flaws. The dimensions of the machine are approximately 10 1/2" X 6" X 9"H. This machine can be used in your cabinet or iron base. Or, it would also make a nice display item. I've included an unfinished round wood plaque to mount the machine on, if you wish to display it. The Wilcox& Gibbs model 64 chain stitch sewing machine“is the stable mate of many collections around the world” While in 1856 the four“heavyweights” Singer. Wheeler& Wilson,Grover& Baker and Howe Sewing Machine Companies were trying to solve the problems of patent litigation and did not have a time to address the issue of an average family’s financial limitations and they almost overlooked the market demand for affordable family sewing machine. In 1855 after James E. Gibbs saw a simple illustration of a Grover& Baker machine it triggered the new idea: The rotating hook on the main shaft could enter into the loop formed by the friction ... morefrom the treaded needle going up through the fabric.
