Vintage Silk Fly Line Level 4wt
Thinning out my stuff and have more of these than I need. As in the photo the line diameter is.035 thousands which makes it a Level 4wt line according to a table I have. Dress it with a little Mucilin and take it fishing. On level lines I use Torenzio silk leaders. You can purchase them online for a very reasonable price. This reliable rig was purchased a little over a year ago for both personal and guide use. I no longer need it and although used. Is not abused. No major wear. We're talking both rod and reel as well as a Cortland precision WF#4 Floating line(one of my favorite lines) I am leaving the factory loop on however I'd suggest a fresh nailknot+butt section be added. The reel is the 4/5 model. The rod comes with the tube and sock. It's ready to fish! No need to spend tons of money on fly fishing. I'd call it a solid and quality all-around trout/panfish etc. rig and by a reputable company. The action is not super fast but certainly not slow. Great for dries actually. You will note the close-ups showing some spots of wear. These are the worst you will find and most of the rig is clean. The rod is in very good condition.

It really feels almost a 3.5wt, as the SPL line generally had the reputation of being a tad lighter than their rating. Yourself, you will understand that you can't fish them all and, unless you have an endless bankroll, some must go. I have a number of rods that put me in a position of overlap and I'm culling the herd. The LL series is also a collector's rod so I am listing it here in anticipation that some of you will appreciate it and FISH IT more than I am able to. Generally, I gush about fly rods. Partly this is because of a fly-fishing passion, but more significantly it is because lately the rods I am saying goodbye to are the best of the rods that I have had. I am keeping only a select few to fish and some of those are no better than what I am selling- ... morethey just have personal signficance for me, or I figure they fish equally well, but won't bring as much money as a rod such as this. The 490 LL is one of the famed models in the LL series(Google"Trout Underground best fly rods of all time" This. Here, is also the wildly rare 3-piece version. Rare because it is an amazing rod, but also rare because few people give them up. Possibly a mistake to do so myself, I am giving up this fly rod with great reluctance. That said, given the demand for such a rod, I am confident it will be passed on to someone who appreciates both fly rod performance and history as much as I. FYI: What makes this rod one of the very best graphite rods of all time is the tip. A spectacular dry fly rod, but an excellent technical nymphing rod in it's own right. Classic American large arbor reel. Fully machined. And fully anodized, and entirely suitable for fresh or saltwater. The reel has a terrific one-way drag, from almost free spool to full stop, with a large indented drag knob. New, it lists for $200, and is rarely discounted, and not discounted much, even on Ebay. R.L. Winston Bamboo Fly Rod San Francisco Rare Light Line taper 8’ 3” 4wt
A two-piece one-tip San Francisco Winston in a rarely encountered light line configuration. 8ft 3inch for 4 wt line, 3 ¾ oz rod, with original bag and tube. The original customer’s name is not on rod but all other writing was preserved during restoration of the rod at Winston in 2001, during which I was provided the following details. Rod was shipped by Winston to a customer in San Francisco on Aug 25, 1959. The butt diameter is 0.300” at 1 ft vs 0.350” at 1 ft for Winston’s 8’ 5 wt rod which also weighs 3 ¾ oz, and the rod has a fine tip of 0.063” During restoration the ferrules were refit and reglued, and a slightly larger stripper and first bridge guide was used. Note that the rod has a total of 4 bridge guides, three on the butt section and one on the tip! Original snake guides were used, and the rod was re-wrapped in the original ... morecolor pattern. The grip and bakelite downlocking reel seat are original. The rod has not been fished since restoration. Sage GFL LL Light Line 4wt 7ft 3in 2pc Fly Fishing Rod- Custom- used. This custom made rod was built on a Sage Light Line 7'3" 4wt. blank. The shorter LL rods are rarely available on E-bay. This custom made rod has a nicely designed uplocking reel seat with walnut? spacer and well designed cigar handle. The rod does not state Sage on the blank but it is the maroon of the Sage LL blank and has the Sage LL rod sack. The grip is decent sized for the rid size. Guides are top quality. The rod case is pvc with two end caps. I fished this rod on small creeks and streams where it was designed for tight casts and spooky fish. It carries a 4wt line very well and has the guts to drag decent fish out of heavy cover. A very nice summer rod for small streams. I have listed the reel separately.
