Alnwick, England This is a great example of a fine. Vintage, collectable and VERY USEABLE"The Conquest" 4⅛ centre-pin trotting reel from Hardy Bros of Alnwick Northumberland. England. It is an alloy reel that spins freely with a ¾" wide drum incorporating a detachable line guard of either nickel or brass. Also on the front are two bakelite handle knobs that are both running freely. There is a quick release catch on the two-screw centre/front drum while on the back there is an on/off ratchet lever. All working well. Also on the back there is a graduated tension device. In white bakelite, that slowly increases/decreases the speed of the ... moredrum's rotation enabling the line to be trotted out from completely freely through six graduations, with half clicks between, to a much slower spinning of the drum. I can see many occasions when this would be extremely useful. On spinning the drum the difference is certainly noticeable. Please see photographs. It has an un-pitted and excellent brass foot. The interior. On removing the drum, can be seen to be immaculate with the spindle, ratchet and drag mechanism all in first class condition and the gun-metal finish in similar state. No wonder it works so well! Cosmetically is commensurate with its age and usage with no dings or dents but would rather the previous owner hadn't tried to clean the tarnish off the back but. If he hadn't, we probably wouldn't have known that it was a Hardy reel called'The Conquest' It weighs 188 grams. It runs superbly freely with no discernable'wobble' and. Although it may be very collectable, I would certainly want to USE it! Please have a good look at my photographs.
