Originally established as Camp Crowder south of in 1941. The post was to serve as an armor training center. The U.S. Army selected the Neosho site for the base because of its proximity to water, railroads, and highways. As it was constructed, it was re-designated as a training center. It was named for. A Missouri general who was instrumental in developing the draft for and the. The post also served as an infantry replacement center and had a small German prisoner of war detention ... morefacility. By 1943 the army had acquired 42.786.41 acres in and Counties. In 1946. The post was deactivated and placed in a caretaker status. While the core of the post was retained, many of the wood temporary barracks were declared surplus and sold. Up for auction is a neat WWII Sweetheart chain pin from Camp Crowder. Camp Crowder was constructed in 1941-42 as a signal corps training center for the United States Army. The camp was named for General Enoch Crowder. A prominent military lawyer who was born on April 11, 1859, in Grundy County, Missouri. The USA part of the pin is missing 7 of the small seed pearls. The“Camp Crowder” is written on black enamel. The signal corp part of the pin is made of enamel. The pin itself has no marks with metal type of manufacturer. Both pin backs are in working condition. UP for auction is a super nice lot of items from 1943 WWII Camp Crowder Missouri. Camp Crowder was named for General Enoch Crowder and had a German prisoner of war camp. During the time of these items were issued. Carl Reiner was stationed there. In the Dick Van Dyke Show. Camp Crowder is where Rob and Laura Petrie met; Rob was a sergeant in Special Services and Laura was a USO dancer. Cartoonist Mort Walker also got his ideas for Beetle Bailey from here. IN this lot you will get a nice magazine full of photos called a camera trip throguh camp crowder. there is some wear to the edges of the magazine and some paper has stuck to the front. it is nice on the inside and features a comic of servicemen fencing in Hitler. Each is a mimeographed WAR NEWS report. There is no publisher or location listed but it came in with a program dated 1945 from Camp Crowder. Mo. and I'm going to guess that's where it came from. Strange paper, not a news print, not a tag, reminds me of the sheets we used for drawing paper when we were kids- manila paper? All in great shape. No discoloration. Each sheet folded into quarters. Before and After Vicksburg by Rev. J. H. Crowder - Civil War - Rare 1924
This softcover book is about 5" X 7 1/2" There is some splitting away of the cover from the spine(see pic 2) but the cover still remains attached. There is some brown staining of some kind on the first few pages especially in the lower right of the pages. I think you can see this on pic 3. No writing in the book. There is normal paper discoloration from age(nothing dramatic) There is no copyright date- the only date I find(1924) is at the end of the preface(pic 4) I was able to find a couple more of these books on-line and they also listed a 1924 date. It looks probable. I believe this to be a fairly rare book. Hopefully you can get the flavor of it from the preface(pic 4) and pic 5.
