Got married in Feb- 2010 and have been working to improve space in the garage ever since. Now it is summer. 2013 and it still holds dozens of lots of angling library that need new homes. Happily, they have been stored in closed/sealed boxes. Overview There are teachers. And then there are teachers. When it comes to fly-tying instructional books, you will see quite a few by first-time authors who never make it past the first or second title. There's nothing wrong with them; they just don't quite have the necessary market ... morepull for a publisher to justify the expense and risk of producing and marketing another. Sitting here writing this, I can think of only four American authors from the mid-1970's to the present who managed to put out five or more fly-tying instructional books. They are 1) Poul Jorgensen; 2) Dick Talleur; 3) Randall Kaufmann and 4) Skip Morris. The first two are now deceased and Kaufmann's latest work is a colossal volume of fly patterns, something of an Index Maximus that you must pay for in gold bars. Skip Morris is still at it; he takes pains to show that for most patterns it is acceptable to use any one of a number of different hooks, and he also encourages tiers to substitute dubbings and other materials as well. Furthermore, he tends to avoid patterns that have already been covered umpteen times by other writers/ photographers. Fly Tying Thread in Custom Storage Container
This is a semi-custom storage container I use for storage of fly tying thread spools. It is a stock plastic container with a homebuilt wooden insert drilled for dowels. The spools are placed over the dowels. This arrangement makes a tidy easily accessible storage solution for thread spools. It has a capacity of 198 standard size spools. The dowels are not glued in place so that they can be removed as needed to allow storage of larger spools if desired. This box is used. But in serviceable condition. Also included are approximately 97 spools of tying thread. These are mostly Orvis and include various colors such as black, red, orange, blue, brown, black, and white. There are gold French tinsel spools, approximately 20, and approximately 5 silver spools. Please see the photo so you can see for yourself.
