I always found these foam models ... moreto be better than boxes with open compartments. I was always concerned that one errant fumble of the hands while picking out my next trout fly would leave me watching the entire contents of the box on the water floating downstream. Not possible with a Wheatley foam style box. The Wheatley foam is unique.very dense, enabling many dozens of flies to be held securely. This model has a flat foam in the lid, great for nymphs and wet flies, and a ripple foam in the base, great for hackled dry flies. Here's what the Richard Wheatley website has to say about this model: Ripple Foam Boxes. Aluminium fly boxes that are available in either black or silver finishes. In two sizes. The special high density, non-absorbent ripple foam makes storage simple. A truly neat presentation of flies without crushing delicate hackles and dressings. This is for a rare Abercrombie& Fitch from the New York store this box is 4 3/8"x 43/8" x7/8" fly clips on two sides = 75 clips and a leader holder. The fly box is made by Richard Wheatley the Rolls Royce of all fly boxes. Wheatley fly boxes were considered as the best fly box back when this box was bought from Abercrombie& Fitch over 60 years ago and is still one of the best made fly boxes to this day. Vintage Wheatley Aluminum Combination Cast/Leader Fly Box, Fly Rod, Reel,Fishing
Vintage Richard Wheatley Aluminum Combination Cast/Leader Fly Box made in England. The top section of the box is designed to store leaders/casts. It contains three vintage leaders: Frost's Kelso Leader. Kingfisher Spanish Silk Worm Gut Leader, and an Orvis Water Queen Leader. The lower section of the box has 40 spring clips for flies in the top and 35 spring clips in the bottom. There are wet flies and streamers on some of the clips. The box has the Wheatley stamp on the side and"Made in England" on the inside lip. There are no dents, the box closes tightly, and there is sign of use. See pictures for condition and contents. Offered for auction is the Swing Leaf for a Wheatley Large Salmon Fly Box. In good used condition. Box size is 6 in x 3-3/4 in x 1-1/2 in, and swing leaf is a bit smaller(1/8th inch in each dimension) to swing freely inside the box. 40 Spring clips(20 per side) are solid and are sized for larger salmon and steelhead flies. This auction is for the Swing Leaf Only. Leaf can be used to replace damaged swing leaf on similar Wheatley fly box. Or as a component of custom wooden or metal fly box with swing leaf.
