It has been clear coated for protection in the water and swim tested. This fish has a large under/bottom lip that is my tribute to the great Cadillac carvers. Deep gill cuts. Carved lips. It has large three-quarter inch blue glass German teddy bear eyes. The scaling is in a vintage folk art cross-hatch style and it woodburned by hand. The fish itself is chip carved and the copper fins are anchored in the hand poured lead. The copper for this decoy is heavy gauge and was picked by my Dad in a field find when looking for antiques. It is not from a copper boiler it is from an older, thicker round wash tub. The underside has a silver color to it. The tail is pinned with vintage brass nails. It is signed by me on the bottom and dated 2014. It has two silver quarters. One of them dated 1915, embedded on the sides. I don't make many decoys each year. This is the first of 2014 and the year is almost over. See details for payment instructions. U.S.A. only. No International shipping. Vintage 6-Tine Dark House Ice Fishing Spear, Pokegama Lake, Grand Rapids, MN
Up for your consideration is an excellent Vintage 6-Tine Dark House Ice Fishing Spear. Which was made by my father in the 1950's. We always had a Dark House on Lake Pokegama, just outside Grand Rapids, MN. We lived next to the lake, so this spear was used, successfully, for many years. My Dad, a Machinist for US Steel, loved to make spears. He often used pitchfork parts for tines and handles and everything was gas-welded or brazed. He liked wooden handles because you could get a better grip for better thrust! He also liked to experiment with different styles off spears. And when he was laid off from the Mines, we would spend many hours in the Dark House catching Northerns, White Fish, etc. for dinner. This spear is about 58" long and the width of the spear on the bottom(tines) is 7 1/2" This old spear is sparkling clean and ... moreis ready to join you in your Dark House. Vintage. Original. Decoy is made by Don Chambers born 1920, Don passed away some years ago. Don knew Charlie Slechta and made 3 decoys similar to Slechta's. This is one of the three. Decoy dates back to the 1960's and measures approx. 11 3/8" long and is in excellent condition. Decoy has been hand made and painted. Wood Body, Glass Eyes, Copper Fins and Tail. Vintage Fish Spear Hand Made Dark House Fishing Spear Unique
Up for Auction is a: it has a unique stop loss hook that comes under the fish to hold the fish tight up against the spear. The width of the spear outside tine to tine is approx. 4 3/8" wide. Tines are 6 1/2" long the spear weighs 2 pounds it is very sturdy and very well made. I do not know when it was made, but it looks very old. The tines are made of steel the receiver is made of brass or bronze it is not magnetic, and the large stop loss hook is also made of brass it is not magnetic either. The cone shaped bronze receiver opening is 1 1/2" in diameter, to receive a large shaft, it has four large screw holes to hold the shaft in Place. The total length of the spear is 12 1/2" long from tip of tine to tip of receiver, the stop loss hook is 15" in total length with a 5 3/4" opening to surround the fish, this is ... morea really cool piece of fish spearing ingenuity, a must have for your Dark house ice shanty.
