Harvey's fish were noted for being a little(or a lot! crude.he was more of a woodworker than a carver and a lot of his creations were subject to what materials he had on hand. Harvey passed away in 1994.he and his wife had 3 sons ... moreand 8 daughters. Well-known and liked. He was very much a gentleman and respected in the decoy community. Harvey was in his 70's when be built the entire lake house in Akeley from the bottom up. He could do about anything he set his mind to and was very"handy" at any number of occupations. His Woodpecker Doorknocker is pretty crude.it is a 9" Woodpecker on a 12" board.the fish are rather"typical" of the two predominant colors that he made. both are 8 1/2" in length with the"Harvey Case paint-job" that was made from wrapping an onion sack from the grocery store around the fish and"spraying accordingly"he had. Harvey was born in 1901.moved to the Walker/Whipholt area of northern Minnesota in the 1920's and lived here the rest of his life. Harvey's fish were noted for being a little(or a lot! crude.he was more of a woodworker than a carver and a lot of his creations were subject to what materials he had on hand. Harvey passed away in 1994.he and his wife had 3 sons and 8 daughters. Well-known and liked. He was very much a gentleman and respected in the decoy community. Harvey was in his 70's when be built the entire lake house in Akeley from the bottom up. He could do about anything he set his mind to and was very"handy" at any number of occupations. Here is a neat old. Unfished FISH BUST'R wood spearing decoy in its original packaging. Marked on the bag with 5134, but the 4 has been replaced with a 5 on one side, and a 6 on the other. Perhaps it was an experimental color that they didn't have a label for. It has the Baxter, MN address. I believe this dates back to the 1960's or 70's. Black back with silver sides and sprinkled with glitter. This is the smallest 5" model. Hard to find in it's original packaging. RARE 18th 19th century spear harpoon sturgeon ice fish fishing blacksmith decoy Up for auction is a very crude old antique harpoon sturgeon spear from the late 18 th or 19 th century. This piece was made of iron forged by a blacksmith it has 5 prongs or tangs; one on the outside has been broken and replace during the period. Length is 22.5 inches. 3.5 inches wide, tangs are 3.5 inches long and ¼ inch thick. The bar section is 19 inches long, width is ¾ inch to 3/8 inch at the top. There is a one inch disc 4 inches from the top. The total weight is 1 pound 3 ounces. Not sure how it was used. On a pole, from a gun or cannon. Found in a large Lake Champlain collection. The only reference I can find that shows the same style of barbs on the tangs is the“Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” page 119 photo#4, ... morestates that fish was a primary source of food for militray troops and spears of this style popular at the time and well into the 1800’s. inkfrogproseries. Up for your consideration is an excellent Vintage 6-Tine Dark House Ice Fishing Spear. Which was made by my father in the 1950's. We always had a Dark House on Lake Pokegama, just outside Grand Rapids, MN. We lived next to the lake, so this spear was used, successfully, for many years. My Dad, a Machinist for US Steel, loved to make spears. He often used pitchfork parts for tines and handles and everything was gas-welded or brazed. He liked wooden handles because you could get a better grip for better thrust! He also liked to experiment with different styles off spears. And when he was laid off from the Mines, we would spend many hours in the Dark House catching Northerns, White Fish, etc. for dinner. The Minnesota made spear still has the original makers sticker on it so seen very little use. The spear is 55 1/2" long with the spear head 5 1/4" OD. 6 Vintage or Antique Spear Spearing Ice Frog Fishing Decoy U.S. Line Company MA
Here is something unusual. Five old frog or fish spearing heads. One in particular is of interest here. It has the label mark for U.S Line Company Westfield. Mass with an eagle logo, and U.S.L. Brand. I believe this is very rare, I could not find any others like it in past or current listings on this site, I did find some catalogs from this company from the early 1950's. The item is like new, five tines, and measures about 3" x 7' x 1" There is also another one that looks like it is made from brass, or copper, it measures 4" x 9 1/4' x 1 1/8" It is marked, made in ND. Then there is one that is green, heavy steel, with an open tang, it measures 5" x 10 1/4' x 1 1/8" no markings which I can see. Number four is the bigger blue spear head 4 1/4" x 9 1/2" x 1 1/4" no markings. The last ... moreone is the smaller blue spear head 4 1/2" x 8' x 1" it has the initials PL engraved on to it. My thinking is that the smaller spear heads ar for frogs, and the bigger ones for fish. Please check out the pictures, and thank you for looking. Propay preferred. Scarce Michigan Ice Spear Fishing Decoy- Pumpkinseed Sunfish- Circa 1930's An honest and scarce Pumpkinseed Sunfish winter spear fishing decoys from Michigan. This decoy dates to the 1930's or possibly the very early 1940's. Most fish decoys seen for sale today are either modern reproductions. Artisan made for the decoy art collector's market, or if made for actual use are just not exceptionally old. This is an honest fish decoy not made for any possible collector resale but for actual winter ice spearing use about 80 years ago. Very few of these actual decoys were carved as sunfish. Most having been carved as trout, perch, pike or just generic in depiction. So this decoy is also a scarce species to find in an early working fish decoy. Exceptional Chautauqua Lake Ice Spear Fishing Decoy - Trout - Circa 1880
Exceptional Chautauqua Lake Ice Spear Fishing Decoy- Trout- Circa 1880 Winter spear fishing decoys from Chautauqua Lake. New York are considered by collectors as the most desirable of all fish decoys from the various ice spear fishing regions within the U.S. The reasons for this desirability are due to a combination of characteristics which include distinctive leather tails. A hole through the upper body for tying the line, a well refined characteristic body shape, carved mouth and gills, and some additional minor features. The fact that winter spear fishing on that lake was outlawed in 1906, thus making any authentic decoy from that region more than 100 years old, adds greatly to their scarcity. It also provides proof to the collector that Chautauqua Lake decoys are among the very earliest fish decoys that one might ever expect to encounter ... moreand specifically date. This particular trout decoy has all of the most desirable Chautauqua Lake decoy features. And is in exceptional original condition, with absolutely no issues whatsoever. Although by an unknown maker. It was obviously accomplished by a contemporary of Ed Irwin, as this decoy is extremely similar to Ed Irwin’s own trout examples. Both Ed Irwin and Harry Seymour are considered the greatest fish decoy carvers from the Chautauqua Lake area. Other fish decoy examples by this same unknown maker are known. Identified only by an impressed“M” or“W” on the metal fins. Some examples have only one fin so impressed, while this particular decoy happens to have all four fins marked. Better and best quality Chautauqua Lake fish decoys rarely appear on the market. And when they do, even examples by unknown carvers will normally bring $5,000-$15,000 or more at auction. VINTAGE HAND FORGED ICE FISHING SPEAR FOR MUSKIE OR STURGEON USED WITH A LONG HANDLE SEVEN TINES in Excellent condition for its age. It measures 21 inches in length and 8 inches wide with the tubular handle 1 5/8th inches in diameter. It weighs 4 lbs. The tapered tines are hammered flat and arched to give a more fluid design and added strength. A wonderful addition to any Ice Fishing Spear Collection from Northern Michigan.
