Here is a fine Vintage representation of a Great Lakes-style ice fishing lure/decoy handcarved and handpainted wooden Catfish. By Carl Christiansen, one of the Premier master carvers of all time. He is from Newberry, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. It was purchased by my wife who lived in Newberry, Pine Stump Junction, and Sault Ste. Marie in the 80's. She loved the quality of his work, thought it was a beautiful example of a catfish from that area, but also a piece of artwork/folk art from the Upper Peninsula! The carving and painting are excellent. Please take note of the pictures for the true quality. The whisker-like barbels. 4 below mouth, 2 above eyes, and 2 long ones at side of head, are made of some kind of rubber. The metal/painted.Dorsal and side fins are in good shape. The eyes are made of glass. There is an intact metal'line ... moretie attachment' with 3 holes. There is a recessed. Lead weight on the bottom with Carl's typical impressed initials- CC" beside it in Black. Lure measures approx. 6 1/2" from upper mouth to tail tip. This was never used and sat on a shelf or in a cabinet forever. However. It fell off a cabinet once, and the tail had to be repaired- part of the bottom tip glued back on, 2 outer tail tips broken off- and were lost.sorry. But this great Catfish looks VERY GOOD sitting up on a shelf now and could be added to your present collection OR start a new one by this extraordinary carver! This is an example of Jed's crazy use of CD's and whatever is around to make an attractive fish. 10" You be the Judge? Gold color with glitter. The initials of the person who carved it are D F D. It has glass eyes with a curved tail. Beautiful color. There is a small chip on the edge of the tail as you can see from the photos. 5 Vintage or Antique Spear Spearing Ice Frog Fishing Decoy U.S. Line Company MA
Here is something unusual. Five old frog or fish spearing heads. One in particular is of interest here. It has the label mark for U.S Line Company Westfield. Mass with an eagle logo, and U.S.L. Brand. I believe this is very rare, I could not find any others like it in past or current listings on this site, I did find some catalogs from this company from the early 1950's. The item is like new, five tines, and measures about 3" x 7' x 1" There is also another one that looks like it is made from brass, or copper, it measures 4" x 9 1/4' x 1 1/8" It is marked, made in ND. Then there is one that is green, heavy steel, with an open tang, it measures 5" x 10 1/4' x 1 1/8" no markings which I can see. Number four is the bigger blue spear head 4 1/4" x 9 1/2" x 1 1/4" no markings. The last ... moreone is the smaller blue spear head 4 1/2" x 8' x 1" it has the initials PL engraved on to it. I am selling off some of my old ice fishing collection. I have been collecting the old decoys for a long time. I have had all for at least 15 years. Here is a Old unsigned John Shermack Ice Fish Decoy. Carved Body, with two tone green paint with white spots. Red& white painted eyes, metal fins and tail that have some paint chips. A single wire line tie and a lead weight in the belly. Measures 5 in. long and 1 1/2 in at its widest point. it is in used, but in good worker condition.
