Vintage E C Powell Split Bamboo B 9 Fly Rod MINT cond. circa 1945 w/ 3 Tips Case
AT AUCTION. NO RESERVE: This is a one-of-a-kind E. C. Powell hand-built split bamboo fly rod in almost-new condition. This would be the crown jewel in any collection. First, the basic description, according to the owner: This fly rod was built around 1945 by E. C. Powell for my great uncle, Joe McMullen, who fished with Mr. Powell. I can guarantee that it was built by Mr. Powell himself. As a kid, I fished with"Uncle Joe" and E. C. Powell's son, Clyde Powell, at the Sizemore Ranch near Meeker, Colorado. Uncle Joe left this rod to me, and it's been put away since then. The rod itself is a model B-9, 9 1/2 footer and would have been used primarily for steelhead, Patent Number 9132986. The kit is complete and includes three tips-another distinguishing feature of this particular rod-and the original cloth bag, and the original ... morealuminum case. I have been in contact with the E. C. Powell Fly Fishers Club regarding this particular rod, and my asking price is based on research and correspondence with the Club. Two of the tips are 47 1/2 inches long; the third is 57 1/2 inches long. The two 47 1/2 inch tips are of two different thicknesses. Engraved in the bottom of the reel seat is 4 1/2. Perhaps the line weight used by Mr. McMullen. A rod like this does not come up for sale very often. In any condition. This rod is pristine. There are no nicks or marks on the reel seat, the cork handle looks new, the wraps are all tight and solid, the varnish is clear and smooth, and all the parts you could ask for are there. An additional note on my feedback rating: I just noticed that my feedback approval rating is at 0 percent. Please note that this rating is the result of the fact that I did not trade on ebBay for a year. And the feedback rating only reflects the past year's transactions. I used it once to catch about 40 grayling up in BC and since then it has sat in my closet. This rod casts like a whisper- the action is fabulous for light weight fishing. For sale is a very hard to find vintage Walton Powell spinning rod with its original rod sock and rod tube. Made by Walton Powell. The son of world famous rod maker E. C. Powell, this is a 2 piece glass rod, 6’ 6” in length. It is completely original with the Walton Powell signature and all original line guides and wrappings. The cork grip shows a little use and the reel seat has a small scratch on it. Please note that the rod tube has the number 588 on it as does the tip top piece of the rod. see photographs) Walton Powell was a world famous fly casting champion who continued the legacy of his Father’s business building rods that are considered to be some of the classics of his time. For your consideration a lightly used Walton Powell graphite fly fishing rod. This was a recent estate purchase from a collection of poles. The condition is excellent it looks like it was used but a few times. I'm under the impression it is a custom order rod. It is stickered"The Walton Powell Rod" And there is no mention of the size or weight. The pole is a dark graphiet gray with faint tiger stripes the length of the pole. The eyelets are bound with forest green thread. Nothing is bent and there are only a couple minor scratches on the surface. The cork handle is perfect. The blank came with original Powell Handle. Powell Vermilion Wood reel set, and tip top mounted by Powell. Rod is wrapped with red wine colored wraps with gray tips. Rod is a medium action rod and would be a good rod for streamers, large nymph, buggers etc. Great rod for trout to small steelhead. Good bass rod as well.
