Ever have the frustration of tying flies when you brake a fine thread halfway through tying a fly. It’s not a regular happening with the serious tyers but quite a common occurrence with most amateurs. The swapping and changing between thread sizes. Bobbin holders etc. has often caught me out when changing to a fine thread and having the drag on the bobbin holder make the thread vulnerable to breaking when pulling more off the spool. I have solved this by now standardizing on small bobbin holders(Pearsall’s Silk size) and winding all my fine threads 10-0. Spiderweb etc, onto sewing machine shuttle spools, which just happen to be roughly the same size as the Pearsall-type bobbin. ... moreThe metal ones, all of which easily hold 100 yards of 10-0 and probably 200 of Spiderweb. Loading them on a sewing machine takes about 30 seconds. The big advantage is that all fine threads now have the same drag from the bobbin holders and I no longer get caught out by a cotton reel size lump dragging a fine thread so tightly that it is on the verge of breaking simply by pulling it off the bobbin.
