I called a friend who knows lures and he did some checking for me, This box ended in about 1947 and this lure started about 1950, So there is a good possibility these two items are married together, They will still sell together for 65.00. Up for auction rather nice and quite Scarce 1912-1914 HEDDON NO.1"HEDDON'S DOWAGIAC" NON LEVEL-WIND"TAKE-APART" CASTING'TRADE' REEL. These were the first reels to ever carry the Heddon name and were sold for only a short period from 1912 to 1914. Built as a"trade" reel for James Heddon's Sons by A.F. Meisselbach& Bro. of Newark. N.J. and is one of the toughest, most desireable reels from either company. With the exception of the model name, these were identical in every way to Meisselbach's famous No.580"Tripart" The faceplate is stamped"HEDDON'S DOWAGIAC" while the tailplate carries the five 1904 to 1909 patent dates. Under the lower cossmember is stamped"A.F. Meisselbach& Bro. Newark, N.J. U.S.A. 80 YARDS" I've added a photo of the original listing ... morefrom Heddon's 1914 catalog. Also included is a photo from page 61 Phil White's classic reference"Meisselbach and Meisselbach-Catucci Fishing Reels" where he shows the first 1912 listing and discusses the rarity of the reel. Comes equipped with strong clicker, tension control, a counterbalanced handle with what appears to be a pyralin grip and a complete"takeapart" feature that allows the reel to be completely disassembled for servicing by simply unscrewing the endplate rings by hand. Reel is in about Good to Very Good condition for these, showing moderate to heavy overall wear and brassing, but still displaying nicely. Works perfectly and remains very smooth-running. Still a nice example of Heddon's first reel. A tough number to come by in any condition and one that would enhance any Heddon or Meisselbach collection. Up for sale is a genuine Dowagiac 150 Rainbow Heddon Made Lure. One of the first"Original Dowagiac" the baits that popularized bait-casting nearly a half century ago. Sinks Slowly. Lure measures about 5 inches end to end. There are 5 treble hooks and a front and back propeller. Color is rainbow colored. The Vest-Pocket Fishing Catalog with 24 lure descriptions is included and the original box in good condition though mildly soiled from age. This lure is up for sale from the original owner. An elderly gentleman who purchased the lure as a boy on his lunch break from school. Purchased at the company store in Cass. West Virginia, an old sawmill town that is now a tourist destination. He tells me the lure was never used. Hope it finds a good home.

Here is a great display piece- a short. Well-made and colorfully wrapped Heddon casting rod- the handle has the heddon n ame near reel seat and there is wear and some loss of plating. No decal on rod but handle piece and tip are in nice shape with g reat wrapping. There is a SECOND tip that is broke n and will be included. The best p art of this is the case: in addition to a brown canvas sleeve. The rod comes as- foun d in this heavy cylinder with leather or leatherette covering and nicely made plated metal ends- and the leather handle is embossed"Heddon's Dowagiac. something I have not seen before. The envelope is an early window type Tanso, with patent information on inside flap on back. In fairly good condition, with wear, some small rips along edges, light soiling. Heddon is a brand of artificial fishing lures created by James Heddon. originally a beekeeper) who is credited with the invention of the first artificial fishing lures made of wood in the late 1890s. The Heddon Company was founded in 1902 to sell the lures. Originally made by hand in the Heddon family kitchen in Dowagiac, Michigan. By 1910 they had a sales distributor in Canada and a new factory in Dowagiac. By 1950 the Heddon brand name was well known and they were producing over 12,000 lures a day. In their growth years, the company also made rods, reels and other peripheral fishing gear. Citing increased competition and wanting to end the business during a profitable time. The Heddon family sold their business to the Murchinson family in 1955. Since then the company has been sold multiple times, finally ending up as part of EBSCO. The belly markings are faint due to use. They read: Heddon 150 Dowagiac. The age is believed to be 1940's or 50's ... moreera. 150 DOWAGIAC 5-HOOK LURE CONDITION: The lure measures aprox. 3-3/4" long. This is the Rainbow color Heddon Original 150 Dowagiac Minnow lure in worn smooth and trolled condition. The"150 Dowagiac Minnow" lure has what we call"General Use and Aging" scattered throughout. You can see the Fisherman use and aging of the older lure in the photos. Our use of the word"multiple" means the lure has a combination of in excess of(10) blemishes. General use blemishes include the following: Small hook nicks. Hook swings, scratches, hairline scratches, paint wear areas, rubs, paint loss or paint flakes, and soiling scattered throughout as seen below. There are scattered crazing lines as seen throughout. The hooks and hardware are aged and tarnished as seen. Actual hook nicking is rock bottom minimal, the lure suffers from mostly paint loss. Remember, the lure has a combination of all these things. Lot of 2 Wood Heddon Dowagiac Minnow #20 Lures 1940's-1950's? from Estate Sale
Two Vintage Wood Heddon#20( Dowagiac Minnow Topwater Lures from Estate Sale At first I thought these were Heddon 110 Minnow lures but the 110's have props on both ends. Now I think these are Heddon#20 Dowagiac Minnows which were made up through the 1950's. The hardware to attach the side hooks is probably from the 1940's-1950's and is different from the hardware on the earlier versions. These lures have really rough paint with large patches of missing paint. The remaining paint has cracks. The hooks vary from needing to be replaced to usable. Antique Heddon Dowagiac Minnow 100 Fancy Back in Wood Wooden Box 1906
Up for bid is a Heddon Dowagiac Fancy Back#100 Minnow lure that is in the original wooden box. Also included in the box is the original paperwork for the lure. Judging by other sites on the internet. This lure is dated from around 1906 or 1907. The lure has been used and there is some flaking of the paint especially over the lead weight. The hooks have some rust on them. Also. There are two spots on the top of the lure that the paper insert has stuck to as seen in the pictures. The box is about 5 7/8" long. 2 1/2" wide, and 1 5/8" tall. On Feb-06-13 at 07:09:01 PST. Seller added the following information: Note(added 2/6/12) I am not certain the lure matches the color description on the box. I have been told by persons who know a lot more about old lures than me(I know nothing-this lure was handed down to me from my father) ... morethat the color of the lure may not be a Fancy Back but instead is a Salt Water Glitter. This is a very cool Heddon fly rod. I think back in the day a company called FOLSOM made some of there better rods. It is a 1520 8 1/2 feet 3 piece down locking reel seat. Comes with a folding landing net. Bag, aluminum tube that says HEDDON'S DOWAGIAC on the cap.The folding net I could not find on the web but it seams like it comes from the same time, the writing on the net says IDEAL on the but section. Most of my fly fishing is done in the salt water, so some of the info could be off a bit. Its hard to see in the pics, but folsom is written obeve the grip on the blank with#1520 under it.

Another Heddon Dowagiac Bamboo Bait Casting Rod, EX with Bag & Leatherette Case!
Heddon Dowagiac Bamboo Bait Casting Rod with Leatherette Case Here is another early Heddon Dowagiac bamboo bait casting rod. The Dowagiac bass decal is 90% intact. The reel seat has the Heddon's Dowagiac imprint with the Dec. 1. 1908 patent for the locking band reel seat. It appears to be made of tonkin cane and the fore grip is made of 1/8" stacked cork rings- the butt grip has 1/2 inch rings. Note the amber agate guides. And the hexagon welted nickel silver ferrule. This is a 5 foot rod with original full length staggered butt and tip section. Only a few of the many intermediate wraps are missing. Comes with the original partitioned bag with a partial label(someone has added a replacement string tie) and a deluxe leatherette heavy fiber case with heavily nickeled brass caps. VINTAGE HEDDON DOWAGIAC 500 RED HEAD SALT WATER SPECIAL FLITTER MINNOW
Up for auction is a very hard to find Red Head Salt Water Special 500 which is in pretty fair condition as it dates back to 1925. It has some chipping. But otherwise it is intact with all the original hardware to include the hooks. It's 3 inches long. The eyes are clear and the flitter pattern is still crisp and all there. The red nose has some tiny chips in the red above the eye and the clear coat has flaked some in that area. There is a paint chip missing from the belly weight area.and the paint has tight age cracks. Nothing has been removed from the lure as I gently cleaned the lure and hooks only. The hooks appear to be original and are still very charp. All I did was to take the rust off them. The pictures pretty well show the condition of this lure.
