AMAZING DFD DULUTH FISH(TROUT) DECOY~ ALL ORIGINAL WITH GLASS EYES BY THE VERY ARTISTIC DAVE PERKINS~ The Duluth Fish Decoys Story" I guess it all started when I speared my first northern pike– what a thrill. The only thing better was to spear one lured in with a decoy I made myself. I made more decoys to spear more fish and found out I liked making decoys as much as spearing northerns. Well. Soon enough, my decoy/lunch box had more decoys than lunch. So I laid off the making and stepped up the spearing. Then when the fish tore them up and they scraped up against each other in the lunch box and they rolled around on the floor of the dark-house they weathered with an aged, charactered, antique patina. It wasn't long before friends paid more mind to my spearing decoys than my fish stories. Said they’d like to have some to set on the ... moremantle– said they were folky. So I laid off the spearing and stepped up the carving. Now I've been making DFD(Duluth Fish Decoys) spearing decoys for longer than I want to admit– they say you’re only as old as you think you are. Being on the north side of seventy, I been making them for… let’s just say a long time. As with all folk art there’s no two alike. The pictures give the length of the decoy but it may vary by a half an inch. They all have glass eyes and are hand painted with a brush– no air brush for us. The lead belly weight is stamped DFD. They all function as working decoys– though most people prefer to set them on the mantle.

Here's an OLD. Primitive, VERY FOLKY, interesting, hand carved and hand painted, curved bodied, BLUE fish decoy- blue is a very hard color to find. Note the carved forked tail. I enjoy"simple" forms and I've had this fish displayed for years- it's in used, original condition with some general overall wear and some paint loss- it has a great patina and good age- I'd guess 1930's +/ Simply carved, on this pure, working fish decoy, I especially like the blue and the subtle curved shape. This fish was found in Michigan MI and is possibly a Lake St. Clair fish. Though no provenance exists to confirm that. This fish is heavy! It has remnants of a very small second rear fin on the back. Note the large square belly weight. I believe it's intended to portray a sucker(the seller I purchased it from said it was a trout) ... moreThe reason I argue sucker is due to the form of the curved head. I Finished this decoy the first time with a different product than I wasn't used too. After I had it listed. The finish started to check, almost to a point that it resembled aged paint. When I noticed the checking I said OH MY GOODNESS, canceled the listing and took the decoy out to the shop and decided to either destroy it or cure it. Useing an old masters tecnique,the end result is was you see. I never did like the bland paint on the first go around so I darkened fins, speckled and motled paint on the back. The decoy is 6-3/4 inches long with glass eyes, heat treated copper swim fins, perfect swim balance and has initial stamped in the lead. Michigan. The circa is 1930. The lead ballast typically painted in Heddon's crackelback paint finish is marked"HEDDON ICE SPOOK" The Jumping Bass box shown is the box that this Spook decoy was found in. I have shown images of each end of the box which is marked with the catalog number, but is now faded and not readable. This scarce Heddon company decoy was only made for about 2 years and is in the most desirable scarcest color of Natural scale. RARE 18th 19th century spear harpoon sturgeon ice fish fishing blacksmith decoy Up for auction is a very crude old antique harpoon sturgeon spear from the late 18 th or 19 th century. This piece was made of iron forged by a blacksmith it has 5 prongs or tangs; one on the outside has been broken and replace during the period. Length is 22.5 inches. 3.5 inches wide, tangs are 3.5 inches long and ¼ inch thick. The bar section is 19 inches long, width is ¾ inch to 3/8 inch at the top. There is a one inch disc 4 inches from the top. The total weight is 1 pound 3 ounces. Not sure how it was used. On a pole, from a gun or cannon. Found in a large Lake Champlain collection. The only reference I can find that shows the same style of barbs on the tangs is the“Collectors Illustrated Encyclopedia of the American Revolution” page 119 photo#4, ... morestates that fish was a primary source of food for militray troops and spears of this style popular at the time and well into the 1800’s. inkfrogproseries. Vintage Joseph Singleton Tumbler ice fish fishing spearing decoy Circa 1920 !!!!
This is one of the most interesting decoys I've seen in recent years. This decoy is actually a tumbler, with a line tie than actually goes into a lead cavity on the top of the fish so it will roll and flopping in the water when jigged. This decoy was carved by Joseph Singleton, The Crisp Point Lighthouse keeper and father of Carver Tom Singleton of Newberry Mi. I purchased this decoy from a friend of the Singleton family that was given the decoy by Tom in the early 60's to use on the Tahquamenon river spearing. Circa 1920. Measures 6" long and exhibits Josephs standard harlequin scheme, with no eyes. Front fins have been removed as I think they probably would have tangled the line as it rolled. This looker measures 6" in length and is beautifully cushioned in a handcrafted, initialed 8" wooden box, adorned itself with a perch on either side. Early Leroy Howell Fish Spearing Decoy Lure w/ Metal Fins & Weighted
From my uncle's Collections of over 40 years. An early Leroy Howell fish spearing decoy hand carved from wood with metal painted fins and weighted underside. all original and retains practically 99% of the original paint. My uncle acquired this piece while purchasing a couple of Chas. Perdew duck calls from a private collection. He was told this was a very early example of a prototype he made when he first started in the 20's but never continued this style. His style is easily recognizable. I have no reason to doubt this due to the other piece I have listed which is certainly a L. Howell piece and this piece also came from this private collection.
