Cool and unique piece of vintage fishing tackle folk art. What can I say- I've seen nothing else quite like it. Almost like a cross between a folk art lure and a one-of-a-kind fish decoy. Lots going on with it and very hard to describe and classify; I like the design and form- great character and patina-shows age. Wear and use. Of course, with lead in the clothes pin legs, it's sure got weight, yet only a line tie on the nose, and no sign of having been one ever installed on the"back. So, might it have been for jigging? I can't say for sure, and the mystery of its design and use, makes the form even more interesting- certainly raises questions. Effective, yet different hook positioning at the rear of the lure. Here is a very well made early Minnesotan fish decoy. I would date this to the 40's. It has many unique features including very nice silver and red paint. The fins are copper. David Perkins Duluth Fish Decoy, Open Mouth, Hinged Tail, Coins, Brass Tacks
This auction is for a vintage Duluth Fishing Decoy(DFD) carved by David Perkins. This 9 1/2" fish has an pen mouth. Coins on either side of its head, three brass tacks behind the coins, glass eyes, and a hinged tail. One of the coins shows a sailboat and Lake Vadnais Tavern printed around the edge while the other shows a mug with TCT above it and TC below. There DFD metal plate is on the bottom. I would like to mention that this is the first hummer I have ever made in this color. You might notice that the"up right" tail on this one is a bit different than the way I usually make them. Bud Stewart is one of the finest folk art decoy carvers of all time. His carving career spanned several decades and all of his lures and spearing decoys are highly collectible. This Bud Stewart Musky measures 9 1/2" long. The gill and mouth features are nicely carved and the decoy has a great look. The condition is beautiful. PR VINTAGE MIKE ALLSUP FOLK ART FISH SPEARING DECOY DECOYS~ICE FISHING LURE
Mike Allsup(deceased) was an obscure fish decoy carver from Minnesota. His decoys are very folky and have wonderful Native American inspired themes. His work is included in the collector's reference book FISH DECOY MAKERS PAST AND PRESENT and are seldom seen on ebay. This pair of decoys are part of a recently aquired group of decoys by this carver and represent some of his earlier work. The Pike is 9 3/4" long and the little bug is 1 3/4" The pike is painted differently on each side. The condition if each is original and unfished with light wear and a very folky look. Jerry Matzen is originally from Minnesota but is no longer living there. His decoys are excellent examples of modern folk art and are widely collected. They are also featured in the reference books THE FISH DECOY volume 3 and FISH DECOY MAKERS PAST AND PRESENT. This folky decoy is painted in a visually appealing"fish on fish" motif with many small fish painted over the body and on the fins. It measures 8" long and is in beautiful original and unfished condition. The maker has signed the decoy on the belly and dated it 1999.
