I have seen 3-4 decoys over the years and they all seem to look a little different. This one has great color and folk art appeal. There are several collectors that focus on Joe fish decoys and they all say they are becoming more and more difficult to find. I would date this decoy to the 50's or early 60's. Largemouth Bass-Half Relief Carving-Wood-Shadow Box Framed-Wisconsin-Fish Decoy
This is a half relief carving of a Largemouth Bass housed in a cherry shadowbox. Fish is made of wood and handcarved. All fins are carved wood Detail is intricate. Scales all individually carved. Glass eye. Carving is 17" long and is housed in a shadowbox that measures 13.5" X 23.5. The box is 2.75" deep. Interior of box is lined in acid free linen mat. The carving has been raised off of the back mat about 1" to give it a 3D effect. I purchased the carving in Wisconsin. But cannot remember the carvers name. It was signed and dated on the back of the fish, but that information was never transferred to the paper covering on the back of the shadowbox.if you know who the carver is please let us know.this guy deserves credit for his beautiful workmanship. Up for auction is a nice spearing decoy purchased in Minnesota. It is not signed by the carver. But it is in the style of Judy Grove from Brandon, MN. This is a long decoy measuring about 10 1/2" and has two-tone green painted body with light green spots, painted eyes, slight carving to accent the gills and mouth, and nicely painted fins and tail. This fish decoy is nicely porportioned and has a nice patina from use. It is in very good condition with some scuffing and soiling and nicks to the paint. Critter Fish Decoy Polywog Natural Folk Art Minnesota
I bought this very well made decoy many years ago in northern Minnesota. It has good age that I would put to the 50's. It is very well carved& finned& has inset glass eyes. This decoy must have been used but it shows moderate use. It appears to have been stained& varnished& intended to have a natural wood finish. I believe given the natural wood this may have been an Indian decoy from one of the reservations. The fins appear to be copper. Of course the most important feature of this decoy is the tail. It is approximately 6 and a half inches long and what appears to be in unfished condition. It has jewel eyes and wood burning like I have never seen on any of Flanagan's fish decoys. The gills& mouth are wood burned as well. Based on my experience the decoys were made in the 1940's. Very nice. Very early, very hard to come by in the different styles Flanagan is known for. Emil Loe Minnesota Folk Art Iron Range Fish Decoy
Emil Loe decoys are very hard to find. Emil was from the Floodwood area and made decoys used in the Iron Range area. Most are from the 40's through the 60's. Louie Leach Unfished Minnesota Folk Art Fish Decoy
Several years ago I bought some unfished Louie Leach decoys all in different sizes. This one is about 9 inches long. It is unfished and in great condition. Louie leach died many years ago and is well known for his well made folk art decoys. The bottom of this decoy is signed by Louie with his initials stamped in"L L" There is a small amount of paint missing from one fin but overall this decoy just shows good patina from age. Authentic spearing decoy from the 30's or 40's likely from Michigan- but possibly Minnesota. Anyone who can identify this let me know and I'll post it. Martin Pestrue(1884- 1953) Standish. MI. Body shows wood grain under the original paint- which is his earlier model. Missing the dot on the tail but this surely seems to be 100% original paint. The top fin is metal- the side fins appear to be painted thick plastic. Obvious age. Flaking and soiling add to it's honesty- from the cigar box fresh. Please study all the photos.
