Up for auction is a fine Folk Art Fish Wood Carving believed to be a Decoy since there is a hole in the top(dorsal) fin and wood is heavy causing it to sink in water. This is clearly ALL handmade and was acquired with many antique folk art items so believed to be quite old(please view pics for details) All wood except for the two pectoral fins which upon close observation appear to be rusted metal. 1950s LEROY HOWELL SILVER PIKE~FOLK ART FISH SPEARING DECOY~ICE FISHING LURE
This classic. Old spearing decoy dates to about 1950 and was found in Minnesota. It was made by legendary, old time fish decoy maker Leroy Howell. Howell decoys are included in all major collectors reference books on the subject and are highly collectible. This example measures 7" long and has this carver's signature, double incised eyes. As you see, the decoy has some added green and orange accent painting and a silver sequence over each eye but the silver paint on the body is original. There is also a small flake missing on the right side of the tail. This is very common to see in Howell decoys with the large, sweeping, wooden tails. This neat. Vintage, with drilled painted eyes, 3 7/8 inches in overall length, and textured scaled, working"Minnow Fish Spearing Decoy" was made by Dennis"D.C. Rivet(1868-1947) of Bay City. Michigan. The circa is 1920's. These neat great swimming, predominantly small Minnow decoys were used in Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay,and were even used by market fishermen in the pre& post depression era. For provenance see page#61 of Art Kimball's, book III. These examples shown, including this one, is from a group bought from the Rivet family in the late 70s. The examples you see in this group of schooling minnows, that are accented with red or gold dots as this one is, were the ones personally used for ice spear fishing by D.C. himself. This one's different as, in this example, an L-Rig, glass eyed Heddon Tadpolly is NOT disposed of, but rather"turned into" a heavily weighted, hand made and hand painted FISH DECOY for winter ice/ spear fishing use, by an enterprising and cost-conscious old time fisherman. His decoys are very collectible and difficult to come by. I managed to get a nice little grouping of decoys by this obscure carver as part of a collection I am listing on ebay this week. 1950 GREEN & WHITE WORKER~FOLK ART FISH SPEARING DECOY~ICE FISHING LURE
This authentic and folky fish spearing decoy has wonderful age and excellent patina. It comes from a time when living off the land was a way of life for many in northern Minnesota. The length is measures 8 1/4" and the decoy is painted in pea green and white. There is some spritzing of red on one side that is probably not original. The most interesting thing about this fish is the unusual. Hand cast lead weight that is attached to the belly. It certainly appears to be original and kind of gives the decoy an interesting look. Vintage Roy Anderson Minnesota 8.5" Folk Art Fish Decoy
Here is a nice vintage fish decoy that was identified as to be made by Roy Anderson from Northern Minnesota when I bought it 15 plus years ago. This decoy is in great condition though it does show some nominal working use. It is about 8.5" long. I would date this decoy to the 1950's. The colors are still nice and bright and this decoy is ready to be added to your collection. Vintage Richard Larson Minnesota Folk Art Fish Decoy
Here is a vintage Richard Larson fish decoy. Hansen fish are covered in Dan Peterson's decoy book at pages 45 and 106. He was from Little Falls. Minnesota and the Mille Lacs Lake area where he was known for his folk art decoys as well as carvings of woodpeckers, ducks and more. Richard Larson's decoys have fetched hundreds of dollars and are very diificult to find.
