I spend a lot of time in the summer searching out wood burls and this one is from the northern Iron wood tree. The burls grow around the outside of many of these trees and the grain is very tight and figured. Pictures can't capture the beauty of these little gems. With very little shaping. A Goldeneye duck head poped out of this burl with it's distinctive head and bill shape. The bill has a tiger eye or fiddleback grain pattern that shimmers when turned in the light! This auction is for a pair of authentic. Old spearing decoys from Minnesota. They are part of a nice collection I am selling on ebay so please check my other auctions. The decoy in the back measures 7" and was made by Cy Halvorson in the 1950s. The other decoy is 6 1/2" long and is the work of Chester Buss. It also is from the 1950s. Both decoys ahve in-use repaint and the halvorson decoy has google eyes added. Many collectors really like to see authentic decoys with a great story to tell. Vintage Pair of Red & White Spearing Decoys Folk Art Fish Decoy Make Do Decoy
Have a pair of vintage spearing decoys. I don't know who made them. The skinny one is a bit over 6 inches long. Paint is flaking off and the rear tin tail is loose.It has been used hard. The bigger decoy is 7 1/2 inches long. It has thumb tack eyes. It also has seen lots of use. These have been in my collection for a number of years. I don't remember where I got them. UNUAUAL JERRY MATZEN DRAGONFLY~FOLK ART FISH SPEARING DECOY~LISTED MN CARVER
This auction is for an early and unusual work by Jerry Matzen. Jerry was originally from Minnesota and grew up in the fish spearing and carving tradition. His decoys are very collectible and difficult to come by. I managed to get a nice little grouping of decoys by this obscure carver as part of a collection I am listing on ebay this week. Matzen fish decoys are included in the reference books"The Fish Decoy. Volume 3" and"Fish Decoy Makers Past and Present" We have not heard anything about Jerry in several years and it is believed he is no longer carving decoys. This decoy was made by Jerry 15 or more years ago. It is probably the only dragonfly he ever made. This dragonfly measures 7 1/4" long and is completely hand made and hand painted. The wings are made from old window screen on a wire frame and the eyes are ... moreopaque white glass. The decoy is in beautiful. Original and unfished condition but there is a spot of paint loss on the bottom of the head. It is signed on the bottom JM which is the early signature for this maker. Tom Hardy is an obscure fish decoy carver from International Falls. Minnesota. I have never met Tom and have no information as to whether he is still carving or not. This decoy represents either a Perch or Walleye and measures 9 1/4" long. It is completely hand made and hand painted. The condition is beautiful, original and unfished with light wear and the fins are made from textured copper. The maker's original tag is included with the decoy. DAVID PERKINS FAT BABY TROUT~FOLK ART FISH SPEARING DECOY~ICE FISHING LURE
This auction is for a collectible. Working spearing decoy from Minnesota. It was made by David Perkins who is one of the most recognized decoy carvers working today. Perkins decoys are featured in several reference books on the subject and are also included in the collection of the Museum of American Folk Art in New York. They have been the subject of numerous articles, prints and TV shows over the years. Mr. Perkins is currently in his late 70s and his decoys are getting more collectible every day.
