This fish just screams folk art. Hand crafted. Simple and subtle, yet colorful and eye catching. It's tall, fat and heavy. Bass Fish Decoys are really quite hard to find. I purchased it off eBay in 2007 and have displayed it in my home since- time for others to enjoy.check out that starting price of $44.50! Don't miss it! I saved a copy of the 2007 eBay description for my files. I'm happy to share it for prospective bidders- It read: a vintage.7-1/4" working Bass Fish Spearing Decoy was made by an unknown/ UNID Port Sanilac Michigan area maker. Estimated circa is 1950's.made from hardwood with a natural finish and colorful accent paint. This straight tail decoy was probably used on the St. Clair River(which connects with Lake Huron with Lake St. Clair) And is south of Port Sanilac located on Lake Huron. Vintage Large Hand Carved & Painted Native American? Folk Art Fish Decoy Lure MI
Here's a vintage. Primitive, VERY FOLKY. Unique, hand carved and hand painted, wood-burned, large, river fish? decoy by an unknown/ unidentified maker. With the unusual, signature"thin" combination of subtly colored paint wash and/or stain, coupled with the heavy woodburning, it's quite possibly of native american origin, though no provenance or confirmation to authenticate this is available. Super LOW starting price! I enjoy"simple" forms and fish with"the look" this one has it in spades. The fish is in used condition with some general overall wear and some paint loss. Simply carved. This working fish decoy, is VERY different and has always held visual appeal for me. I especially like the thin light paint/stain wash in various colors like silver, rose, yellow and pearl- also its large faceted(what I ... morethink? are) glass eyes surrounded by a light rose wash/blush. The rear tail fin is loose and I"think" original as the material matches the dorsal fin. With the tiny, very thin slits on the sides just above the belly weights, it"may" have had small dorsal fins at one time- it was likely used as a river decoy. If I recall correctly this fish was originally found in Michigan MI. But I can't say for sure if it was made there. The Maker is UNID/ unknown. Overall straight length against a ruler is a full 10" If anyone knows the maker or origin. Or can verify if it is indeed of Native American origin, I'd be pleased to share it in a listing update. This is a half relief carving of a Speckled Trout(not sure on species) housed in a cherry shadowbox. Fish is made of wood and handcarved. All fins are carved wood Detail is intricate. Each spot on the fish is handpainted. Glass eye. Carving is 15.5" long and is housed in a shadowbox that measures 12" X 22. The box is 2.75" deep. Interior of box is lined in acid free linen mat. The carving has been raised off of the back mat about 1" to give it a 3D effect. I purchased the carving in Wisconsin. But cannot remember the carvers name. Ice Fishing Spear Up for auction today we have a real nice Ice Fishing Spear Decoy. I am positive that it is vintage and It might be considered antique. I can not find a name on it. So I am wondering if it could be Blacksmith Made. The width if the metal spear is 4 3/8 and 20 7/8 long. It has 5 tines. The points are still nice and sharp. The overall length is 79 3/4 including the handle. 90% of the wooden handle is wrapped in a early type grip tape. It would make a great display in a cabin type setting or make a nice addition to any fishing collection. Primitive Hand Carved Ice Fishing Decoy Really nice piece by Robert L Mihaescu. Carver. I'm not sure what the fish is, maybe a pike? Anyway, it is beautifully carved with nice detail on the face, the scales, and the tail. He is curved around making for a great display piece. There are metal fins on the sides and glass eyes. Eye hook on top for tying. On the bottom are four inserted weights and the signature of the artist. This large size decoy measures 12" long. About 8" wide. Here is a Very RARE and Very EARLY Ernie Newman Fish Decoy. It is 10 1/2" Long. The top of the decoy has been repainted. But if you look closely, there are little dots under the black paint. SO, it is my belief, the original paint is under the black paint. You should be able to see this in the last photo. The fins are clearly Newman fins, cut out of a can of some sort, probably a tobacco tin. This would pre-date the airplane metal fins. This wonderful. Vintage, no eyed, straight tail, 5 1/2 inch, with it's neat wire form line tie"Fish Spearing Decoy" was made by an unknown Michigan northern Lower Peninsula maker. The estimated circa is 1920's. It has unique copper adjustable side fins. These bendable fins allow the spear fisherman to bend the side fins to put the decoy in a diving or rising swimming mode. Aloso by bending the dorsal fin it allows the decoy to swim in a somewhat right or left swimming mode. These unique type of fins are referred to as rudder fins. This straight tail fish attractor was a river decoy and suspends nicely with a horizontal attitude. It is truly Americana folk art personified. The condition is with much in use wear with the top and bottom of it's tail gone. Here we have a Duluth Fish Decoys Folk Art Large 14" Pike Spear Fishing Folk Art Decoy. This decoy is in excellent shape and was made by Dave Perkins of DFD. This is a larger decoy and has wonderful paint as well as beautiful wood work. The bottom of the fish is signed DFD and it is about 14" in length.
