Maker: BERNARD INSTONE. BIRMINGHAM 1928*The celebrated artist Bernard Instone was born in 1891 in Birmingham. He developed an interest in jewellery from his brother Lewis at the age of 7. When he was 12 he went to the Vittoria Street School. Birmingham, on a scholarship, where he learnt silversmithing and jewellery making. Bernard and his brother went to Berlin to study following an invitation by the German Court goldsmith Emil Lettre, but tragically Lewis died there in an accident. Bernard then went to work with John Paul Cooper in his Westerham studio, until he was called up for the First World War. On his return in 1919 he set up the Langstone silver works with his brother Reginald in Digbeth, Birmingham. Bernard was made a Freeman of the Goldsmith's Company in 1936, and a Liveryman in 1938. He was now was selling to a broad range of clients including Sibyl Dunlop who he visited every Friday at her shop in Kensington, supplying her with made up designs already marked up with the SD mark, ready for the retail market. Attention anglers and vintage lure collectors: Here we have a vintage Shakespeare Darting Shrimp wooden crankbait fishing lure. Made in USA by William Shakespeare Co. of Kalamazoo. Michigan. Body is approximately 4 inches long. With belly mounted treble hook and trailing treble hook. Yellow with red head and yellow glass eyes and gold glitter on dorsal area. Paint is largely intact, but is cracked and a few chips have flaked off, exposing the wood. Otherwise in fine shape. Wood is also exposed at the joint, but this area was not painted to begin with. The only rust is on one of the trailing treble hooks. The Darting Shrimp first appeared in catalogs in 1928. But was not fully patented until 1931, and does not appear in any catalogs after the late 1930s, which would date this lure to the 1930s. The collector's value range for this model ... morelure has been estimated from $200-$300. This wonderful. Vintage, 2 inches in hollow aluminum body length and 5 1/2 inches in overall length"Worden Bucktail Revolution Fishing Lure" was made by the William Shakespeare Company of Kalamazoo. Michigan. The circa is 1902. This is the earliest of the Bucktail Revolution lures, with the props marked WM. SHAKESPEARE JR. KALAMAZOO, MICH. PAT. APPLIED FOR. The condition of this desirable 100 plus year old fishing lure with it's beautiful patina is with slight in use wear only. There is some corrosion on the props(see my close up images) It is with the original hooks and bucktail. HELLO and thanks for looking. Here is an older SHAKESPEARE“SEA WITCH” in I believe its called a silver flash finish. This has painted eyes and measures about 2 ¾” inches long. Condition is USED probably VG maybe better. You decide after seeing pictures. Belly weights have paint on them but the outline of them is loose. Neat older bait!
