Here is a n old South Bend Troll-Oreno#978 wooden fishing lure. Circa 1920. This is the no eye version. Length is 4 3/ 4" It has a soldered tail screw eye and heavy duty hooks. One hook barb is broken off. There is a chip on the left side of the mouth that goes into the wood and a paint chip by the middle hook. Some age checking and pointers are apparent. It is in pretty decent condition for such an old lure. My auctions end on Monday and Thursday. The fact that it is labeled"Original" means that it was made after 1964, when South Bend lures were made by Gladding, then later by Evans. The lure is 2" long; the tail is 2 3/4" long. Burn is 3/8 inch diameter and has a paint chip about 1/8 long next to the burn. Rest of white paint is rough like a sand finish. And has age crazing. Red paint is bright and glossy with a couple tiny dark spots. Weedless wires and hooks are shiny bright. I don't believe this was fished much, maybe not at all? LURE MARKINGS: This version has the markings worn off or was never marked due to age. The normal marking reads: South Bend Bass-Oreno. The exact ... moreage is unknown but known to be pre-1936 as this version has the glass eyes. BASS-ORENO" WOOD LURE CONDITION: The lure measures aprox. 3-3/4" long. The right glass eye has been mostly cracked and broken with a good share of the eye missing. The left eye is intact and has two small hairline cracks! The"Bass-Oreno" lure has what we call"General Use and Aging" scattered throughout. You can see the Fisherman use and aging of the older lure in the photos. Our use of the word"multiple" means the lure has a combination of in excess of(10) blemishes. General use blemishes include the following: Small hook nicks. Hook swings, scratches, hairline scratches, paint wear areas, rubs, paint loss or paint flakes, impressions, and soiling scattered throughout as seen below.
