This is a badge worn by Civil War veterans at the 1907 Blue and Gray reunion held at Fort Fisher. North Carolina. It consists of a 1 1/4 inch celluloid pinback with brass pin on rear, made by the Whitehead& Hoag Company of Newark NJ. The pinback has a 1 1/4 inch by 2 inch blue and gray striped ribbon attached. Written on the celluloid is"1865-1907- Fort Fisher- Glory Enough for All" The brass pin on the rear was likely used to attach the larger ribbon to a veteran's lapel. The large ribbon is approximately 2 1/4 inches by 6 1/2 inches and is a member's badge from the 117th New York Volunteers. Flag has the earlier and scarcer Staggered 48-Star Pattern which would likely date flag to c.1912-16 vintage(after 1916 most 48-star flags were switched to the even row and column pattern) Flag is 13" x 8" On it's original pole which is broken off at the bottom. This is another nice antique item coming out of the historic house at 121 Washington St. in Marblehead. MA built in 1700, the contents of which were sold off this past month. I'm not sure where this GAR flag is originally from. Flag is whole with no tears or holes. There are wrinkle lines in the material. It is made of a stiff linen of some kind. Civil War GEN. GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC 33rd Encampment Fancy Dinner 1899 ~ITEM DESCRIPTION~ The GAR- Grand Army of the Republic- Union Army veterans of the Civil War. Held their 33rd annual encampment in Philadelphia on September 6-7, 1899. At that time they had 288.000 members. Now there are none. One of the treats was the gala dinner held for them at"Boothbys" I found there was a Boothbys Hotel and restaurant in Philadelphia in the late 1890s. I presume this was where the dinner was held- the name is mentioned on the menu. But no further information. This must have been a very select crowd- not many restaurants could serve tens of thousands of people. The menu sounds very fancy. Several wines were served. There was soup, sauteed chicken, braised sirloin, Philadelphia squab(keep those pesky pigeons out of the park) peas, salad, with Neapolitan ... moreice cream, black coffee and cigars for desert. The back of the menu is decorated with several signatures and some rather amateur or childish drawings of a patriotic bird with ribbon in his mouth(maybe one of the squabs) A dog's head, stars, other squiggles, and by one of the signatures"Oakland Poultry Yards, Trenton, N.J. Was this one of the grandkids playing around? Email with any questions or if you need more details. A fellow eBayer asked the size of the menu- it is 8-1/2" x 5-1/2" ~CONDITION~ Fine. The menu card had a cardboard stand the folded out from the back. A little flabby right now. The card is colorful, and probably rarely seen. 1917 Enameled GAR Presentation Badge to Idaho Commander Presentation GAR badge named to a"Barnes" Department Commander Boise Idaho and dated June 21 1917. I cannot decipher the fancy engraving for the two initials. First appears to be an"R" but the middle initial is a mystery to me. Flag is all enamel as is the blue"shoulder board" type of piece above it. I don't know if the two gold stars are made to signify Major General rank but the shoulder board piece is well detailed even to simulating the bullion thread on the edges. There is some color flash on the enamel of the dark blue shoulder board that comes from my scanner. Badge is mint with no defects or damage. Enamel is perfect. Pin does need to be straightened but works ok even now.

The larger buttons measure about 1" in diameter. The smaller measure about.5" in diameter. The two other buttons were purchased in the same lot, and are obviously made by the same maker. I assume they may be uniform related.never the less you get all you see pictured here. There are not marked. Loops on reverse are all in tact. Great items for you vintage collection.
