GAR Grand Army of the Republic Souvenir Cast Iron Cap Paperweight 1915 Wash D C
I have not been able to find another example of this GAR collectable on line so I assume it is very rare. I also assume that it is a paperweitght that must have been sold or given away at a GAR encampment in Washington D. C that year. It is made of cast iron except for the GAR wreath insignia which I believe to be cast brass and is riveted on. It does have some very light tarnish but I would categorize the patina as excellant and the paint to be original. Embossed on the bottom of the inside of the hat is the capital building in Washington. It measures 4" long. 3-1/4" wide and 1-3/8" high. I am offering it for a buy it now price of $85. Two are for the Final Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic, or G A R, both of these covers have the G. A. R. Postage stamp affixed one is postmarked Indianapolis Indiana, August 29, 1949, other cover is postmarked Decatur Illinois September 1, 1949. Both of these covers have wonderful vignettes of the GAR membership medal etc. The next two covers are Confederate veteran related. One is for the final encampment of the United Confederate Veterans or U C V. This final encampment cover is postmarked May 30, 1951 and has the official UCV postage stamp affixed and features a wonderful vignette of the last pattern Confederate flag. 3 GAR post Civil War Encampment Pins Framed one w/name Yehudi NY SLC
These are 3 pins(Medals) from my collection that I believe to be GAR post Civil War related relics. To protect and display them I pined them onto blue heavy shirt cloth that is attached by fabric spray to a frame board. They are inside an 8x10 shadow box style photo frame that can hang on a wall or stand on a desk. They were all bought in the same box of pins. Buttons and badges but that doesn't mean they they were all owned by the same veteran, but on the other hand it might be a clue that they could have been. Found at the Brass Armadillo Antiques Mall in Denver CO in 2004. One badge has the last name hand written on it YEHUDI in the name window. I believe this to be written period to the piece. That badge says BUFFALO NY Across the top. In the lower rt under the ribbon it says CIty Hall on the left is the"Seal of the City of Buffalo" ... moreIt has 2 pin attachments on the back with the OLD style c closures The upper pin is to fasten the item to clothing and the bottom pin appears to have been a ribbon pin. I could not find one like it on the internet and do not know if it is North or South and which encampment(did NY host more than one encampment? Did they have more than one kind of medal? One badge has REPRESENTATIVE above GAR(enameled letters) and SALT LAKE CITY UTAH below GAR. The Eagle is above and has the old pin back with the C closure. The pin is made by J.K. Davison's Phila per back stamp. According to the internet this is a Forty-Third National Encampment metal for the Grand Army of the Republic held August 9– 14. 1909 in Salt Lake City Utah. The encampment coincided with the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The metal at its widest, measured across the eagle’s wings, is about 2.1 inches. nice enamel work. acquired this frame with glass and sliding back from a picker. frame contains 3 silk type ribbons with dates and regiments and other info. all 3 ribbons are in rough condition but most have much readable info. each is about 2 1/2 x 6 or 7 inches. some reunion dates are 1898 and 1901. these are from baltimore and 2 from ohio. also in frame is a metal#7. this is about 1 1/2 inches long and appears to be in good condition. also a small red. White and blue ribbon with metal clasp in center. i took 3 seperate pics of the 3 ribbons, hope you can read them. i did not remove these from the frame so do not know if there are any attachments on back of pieces. will guarantee these to be old but you are buying as is. hope someone can use them. entire frame will be sent to buyer. see pics. First. Let me say I know nothing about Civil War medals. My husband inherited a lot of medals and buttons from his grandfather. Who lived in Sterling, Kansas. This GAR Ve teran's medal is one of them. On the rear. Someone has written the name SHAY. I checked and there was a John Shay and a Frederick Shay from Kansas who were in the war. Overall the piece is in good condition for its age. With the exception of fraying at the bottom of the ribbon where it is attached to the lower heavy medal. I understand that is fairly common due to the weight of the medal. The entire piece measures 3 1/4" long and about 1 7/1 6" wide. Free insured first class postage to USA. Civil War Philadelphia Brigade GAR Reunion Drum Battle of Gettysburg 1915 G.A.R.
ONE-OF-A-KIND Civil War Veteran Item! No Reserve! Shipping cost will be determined after it ends- it will vary due to your location because it's a little large. USA bids only. ORIGINAL G.A.R. Civil War Veteran Reunion Drum from the 25 Year Reunion of The Philadelphia Brigade. This was one of the great Brigades of the Civil War. Being in existance for nearly the entire war, fighting in some of its most pivotal battles. They fought at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Siege of Petersburg, Gettysburg etc. They had a pivotal role in defending against Pickett's Charge. The drum measures 16" wide and is about the size of a snare drum. The skin is painted with the Brigade's Shamrock insignia. And lists the various Regiments that made it up- 69th, 71st, 72nd, 106th. As you can see in the pics, this unfortunately has some ... morecondition issues. The skin on the side that is painted has torn at the edge more than half way around. The hoop on the side of the painted skin is a little out of whack which probably contributed to this being torn. I was told by a drum maker that several of the metal parts that hold it together are missing- and several of the ones here are missing pieces to them. He told me there really isn't a way to repair the skin onto the drum. Has light wear otherwise though. One positive thing due to the torn skin. Is on the inside of the drum several things are written in pencil: Makers names Odward Dayton and William Dayton, Masontown PA, December 19, 1914. So the reunion itself must have been held in 1915. Great piece of Civil War history from one of the great Brigades of the war- Exactly 150 years ago they were soon to make their most well-known fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg. GAR Coat with Civil War 2nd Lt's Shoulder Straps, Gar Medals
This Frock Coat I believe is from the later 1800's. It has the Veterans Shulder Straps. His GAR membership medal as well as a medal for the 1905 Ohio Encampment. There is a name inside the jacket of JA Kelley. Not sure if that's the Vets name or who made the coat. It's an interesting piece never the less. Shoulder straps are bullion, appear correct in manufacture for the period. I have taken a close up for your review. As I'm not 100% sure I'm pricing accordingly. I had someone who I trust look at them and he felt they were real but are in remarkably good shape for their age. Everything else on the jacket is period. The buttons are GAR and period. Here’s a RARE 1891 47 th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment– 19th Annual ReUnion Ribbon– Held at Easton. PA, October 22, 1891. The Ribbon makes reference to the Regiment’s battle at Pocotaligo. South Carolina on October 22, 1862! Pocotaligo. S. C. From October 21/22, 1862, The 47th PA proceeded to destroy the railroad bridge over the Pocotaligo. And sever communication between Charleston and Savannah. Advancing a few miles, and debouching upon an open, rolling country, it suddenly received a heavy fire from a rebel field battery. The brigade was deployed to the front, passing the artillery, and drove the enemy from his position. At Frampton the rebels were found posted in a wood with infantry and artillery. The approach to their position was over an open cotton field. The brigade was formed in line of battle, with two companies thrown ... moreforward as skirmishers, and charged upon the enemy in the face of a terrific fire. This bold movement had the desired effect. The affrighted enemy fled in precipitation. Pursuit was immediately given, and after an exciting chase of four miles, he was found in force at Pocotaligo Bridge, under command of General Walker. A ravine here ran between our line and the enemy. The Forty-seventh was ordered to relieve the Seventh Connecticut, and forming upon the edge of the stream, for two hours kept up an uninterrupted fire. The enemy being strongly posted behind works, and receiving reinforcements, poured forth a murderous fire upon our line, frustrating every attempt to cross the ravine. The ammunition of the artillery was entirely exhausted, and night coining on, the command was withdrawn, and returned unmolested to Mackey's Point. For sale is a great combination knife. Fork and spoon found on the road to the Rorhback farm at the Antietam battlefield. Old GAR hall tag states this. As to condition this must have been picked up soon after the battle as the wood handles are in great shape. O.T. Reilly the early battlefield guide and relic dealer tag is attached. Stewart(1848-1917) who was Commander In Chief of the GAR from 1901-02, other letters(some signed) a Naval GAR flyer, unused raffle ticket for gold watch, and more. A few duplicates(but not many) A nice GAR dealers lot. Condition ranges from poor to fine, mostly very good. Up for sale 1902 GAR MEDAL- 36TH NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT. WASHINGTON Description: Top bar is made up of the letters“GAR” with a bar inscribed“WASHINGTON” superimposed over the center of the three letters. The enamal is wearing off some see photos. The pin on the back is intact. The main medal has a spread winged eagle on top with a relief of the US Capitol building at center flanked by the figure of a soldier and a sailor. At bottom is a GAR star with a bust of George Washington surrounded by a laurel wreath at center. A riband surrounds the relief of the Capitol building.
