Canteen From An 1800s Civil War Veteran's GAR Encampment
I'd like to find a good home for this old Civil War veteran's GAR relic. Research and consultation indicates that this is a Civil War Grand Army of the Republic Encampment souvenir canteen presented during one of the earliest encampments. Maybe even the 1866(first) encampment. It's 2 1/2" in diameter. Felt covered and identical in size, material and construction of other GAR Encampment souvenir canteens that have been put up for sale on various auction sites, but doesn't have a"We Drank From The Same Canteen" tag or label. Either the label is missing or labels weren't even put on canteens until later encampments. I've added pictures of an 1898 Encampment souvenir canteen for comparison(my thanks to seller chuckycity) It's a great historic item for a collector of 19th century relics and GAR artifacts.

1902 ? GAR Veteran Berdan Sharpshooters WI Vicksburg MS Post 384 Detroit MI
Up for sale is this group of five pictures. Having scanned them and done a little research. Other than all being Civil War related, they probably should be listed in three different groups, but I am listing them as all five together as that is the way I found them. As for dating them, only the first one, that shows the life of a member of Detroit Post 384, Department of Michigan, is what I would call a conventional cabinet card. The rest are pictures mounted on a grainier matboard. I've shown a picture of the back of the first one and then just one picture of a back of the other four since they are all the same. So, I said"1902? in the posting as I presume that the first picture was made around that time to celebrate that specific veteran's life(I wish I knew his name. Anyway, I have rambled enough, here is a detailed description ... moreof the five pictures. The first one is the one that shows the six pictures at different stages of the veteran's life. In the 1902 picture he has his GAR membership badge and next to that is a badge that says"Post 384. This picture is comprised of a picture on one matboard that measures around 6 1/8" by 9" This is then mounted on a larger matboard that measures around 10" by 13" As you can see the larger matboard has the bottom right-hand corner missing and a bend or crack along the top left-hand section that runs along top the smaller matboard and also bends the top left-hand corner of the smaller matboard. Both matboards have blind stamped on them the photographer"C. M. Hayes& Co. Detroit. The next two are of Sergeant James W. Staples of Madison. Wisconsin, who enlisted in Company G of the first regiment of the United States Sharp Shooters that was started by Hiram Berdan. He enlisted on September 18, 1861 and was killed on June 30, 1862, in the battle of Charles City Cross Roads Virginia(Glendale or Fraizer's Farms. The pendant is sharp front and back with a dark spot at lower left of center shield. Serial No. V12372 on arm. This would have been attached to a tri-color ribbon on the bar which in turn attached to an eagle with cannons pin back. The back of the pendant shows the insignia of the various Union Army Corps. The front side of the"Sons of Veterans" with the Civil War soldier and Sailor in front of the American flags topped by the American Eagle. Front has several shades of blue together with red.Green,yellow and gold colors.The back has a landing of a ship with the sun raising to its right and the suns rays shining on the ocean. It has the date of 1784 and"New Hampshire" which should be the founding year of the state. Again beautiful colors on this side too! Those that collect"Whitehead and Hoag" medals know what the bottom piece might be made of. Both ... moresides of the bottom piece have a shiny like protective coating and the off white color underneath from time hint at what it has a good chance of being made of. The ribbon itself is in Beautiful condition also. Dated 1908 at bottom but hard to see because of the curve of the ribbon at bottom going into the circle hoop to connect to the double sided medal. The ribbon has a long stick pin on its back for the wearer. This is one of two medals I am listing from my own private collection. The other one being a"POS of A" medal/ribbon. Which is again like this one and in beautiful condition. This is a beautiful medal in Great condition and will be one of your favorites of your collection for sure! GAR Ribbon PA Department Commander Campaign 1912 Thomas H. Cole
Up for bid is a G.A.R. Ribbon in support for the candidacy of Thomas H. Cole for Department Commander of the GAR for the 1912-1913 year in the State of Pennsylvania. Thomas H. Cole served in artillery batteries F and M in the 4th U.S. Artillery. He was a member of Strong Vincent Post No. 67 of the Grand Army of the Republic in Erie Pennsylvania. Thomas Cole did end up serving as Department Commander for the Department of Penn. in 1912-13. This ribbon was owned by Chas. O. Hohe of the 176th Reg. Penn. Militia and was a member of the GAR and lived in Emaus PA. The ribbon has some tears including one that is almost completely through and is held together by a few threads. The ribbon is about 7 1/2 inches in length. Still a nice GAR ribbon that displays nice from Penn GAR. Shipping is $2.00.

The first backing ribbon being Gold and the Second is Red, White& Blue, unfortunately the Gold ribbon is lost to time. It is a piece of the Elm tree under which General George Washington assumed Command of the American Army during the Revolutionary War. July 3, 1775. Presented to Frank P. Blair Post No. 1, Department of Missouris, Grand Army of the Republic. By Thomas H. Lucy of William H. Smart Post No. 30 of Cambridge Mass. The tag was glued onto the chunk of wood, but has since dried out and fell off. You can see the glue residue on the tree. Wood is about 10 inches long and.75 inches thick with some bark left along outside. Interesting historical piece. This should be circa 1923 when the tree was cut up and preserved across the country for historical purposes. G.A.R. This auction is for one(1) two piece Veteran's reunion medal with ribbon generally described as follows. The full text of the medal is stamped: GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC VETERAN 1861-1866 48TH NATIONAL ENCAMPMENT DETROIT AUG. 31 SEPT. 5 1914 Also stamped on the upper piece is the French Explorer de Cadillac in a boat with July 24, 1701. Stamped on the bottom piece are the initials of the GAR. The maker mark on the reverse is stamped: F(or P) H. NOBLE& CO. CHICAGO The medal also retains the original hanger pin and red-white-blue ribbon. Condition is very good to excellent used. The medal is excellent with minor age and storage soiling. The remains of the very top of the original ribbon are still on it. But as you may see from the photo, the pin for attaching it is broken off, so it won’t serve to actually hang a ribbon. Formed to show all the military/patriotic Civil War and GAR motifs, e.g. eagle holding crossed cannon, unfurled American flag, the GAR emblem, crossed cannon, crossed sabers, crossed muskets, etc. Also has"GAR" cast into the silver handle. Condition is excellent although it is missing the metal tip. A new one could be added, although it doesn't detract as it is. It is also possible that this was used as an umbrella holder. The owner of this cane was an old man who in his youth had gone through the horriffic battles of the Civil War. GAR Grand Army of the Republic Souvenir Hat Paperweight Cast Iron 1915 Wash D C
I have not been able to find another example of this GAR collectable on line so I assume it is very rare. I also assume that it is a paperweitght that must have been sold or given away at a GAR encampment in Washington D. C that year. It is made of molded cast iron except for the GAR wreath insignia which I believe to be cast brass and is riveted on. It does have some very light tarnish but I would categorize the patina as excellant and the paint to be original. Embossed on the bottom of the inside of the hat is the capital building in Washington. It measures 4" long. 3-1/4" wide and 1-3/8" high. I am offering it for a buy it now price of $85.
