The aluminum bait container has a patent number of 2484122 which date the item 1949. The bait box is designed to"fool" the living bait by allowing the bait to swing.so that bait that was thinking it was safe on the bottom suddenly finds itself at the top with a quick flip by the fisherman. Vintage Bait Baffler Box Belt Worm / Nymph Lug Fishing made by Ross in Idaho
For sale at a fixed price is this classic bait box.the Bait Baffler. from H.S. Ross in Twin Fall Idaho. These all aluminum carriers have a terrific design. They have a spring loaded top and then they turn over so that nymphs and crawlers working their way down will be right on top when the box is turned over and opened. This design is terrific for either garden hackle or I like to use them for Stone Fly nymphs and Salmon Fly nymphs that Ive netted. usually with a little grass in there to help them stay damp. It is about 4 inches long. Most important about these is that they are no longer being manufactured. The plastic made in China replacements are a poor substitute in my opinion. This is a rare. Vintage, antique, highly collect-able H.S. Ross"Bait Baffler" in good used condition. These aluminum constructed bait boxes were initially first manufactured in Twin Falls. Idaho by the Wemac co. In the Post World War II era and through the 1950's but are now no longer made. H. S. Ross. A Boeing Aircraft Mechanical engineer applied for it's patent on August 24th, 1945 and acquired it on October 11th, 1949(U.S. Patent# 2484122) This bait box measures 3.75" long X 2.50" high X. 2.25" deep. The first one is a circular leader box and it still has the fabric intact inside the container. The second two are rectangular and look like they can hold either flies and/or leaders. They also have the fabric completely intact. The last is a small H S Ross Bait Baffle. The box has an etching of a fish on it. The H S Ross box is the worst of the bunch. This vintage h.s. ross bait baffler has a pat. Number but i cannot make it out. I was hesitant to let this go because i found it at my great grandmothers in her storage shed.
