Antique Primitive Handmade Iron Fish Frog Gig 24" x 7" 4-Tine 3.5 lb Handsome !!
This is great old fishing/frogging gig. Handmade out of iron, rusty and well used but a great display piece. Measures 24" long and 7" wide across the four t ines and it weighs 3 lbs. 6 oz. It has part of the original wooden pole still in the hozzle. I don't know its age or maker but it came from the estate auction of a collector of antiques. I have another five-tine gig head listed now. Also from the same estate sale. This item is described as accurately as possible. This is a rather mean looking gig. A very primitive looking, working spear that would latch on tight to whatever you are trying to impale. Overall length(no pole, obviously) is 10.25" with about 5" of that being the tines and the rest handle. The two outer tines have barbs on the ends that are 2.125" long themselves and are pointing inward, the barb on the center tine is pointing down and is about 1.75" long. There is about.75" between the tips of the tines but only about.5" between the tips of the barbs and the center tine. The open end of the gig will only accept a small diameter ... morepole. Antique/Vintage Ice Fishing Eel Gig Gigger Frog Spear 5 Tine Prong Folk Art
Up for auction is an antique/vintage fishing gig that belonged to my dad. My dad used it in the 1930's or 40's so I know it is very old. I'm not sure if it was originally this color or if he repainted it. If he repainted it. It must have been done a very long time ago because it has that great vintage green color. The tines are 3- 4 1/4 inches long(the middle one being 3" and the outer ones 4" to 4 1/2" The handle that it was attached to is long gone but I'm sure it could easily be added. It would make a great display item with other antiques or folk art. I'm not interested in fishing so it's time to pass it on. Its marked PFLUEGER ECKO MADE IN THE USA, it was originally advertised and sold as a pfluger ecko frog spear from the 1920's to 1960's and was often mistaken for a fish spear but can be used as both, it has bright red enamel paint and two holes at the base for mounting onto a wood pole. I am showing this Vintage Iron Fishing Gig Spear Head that may be Hand forged. It may have been used for fishing. Eel, frogs. It is very primitive. The piece is approx. 10" high and approx. 5 1/2" wide at the widest part. It is in good used condition. It has some light surface rust and dings. I would say it is very old.
