I wish I had stuff this good when I first was learning how to fly fish. A Winston Vapor 4 piece 9 foot 4 weight Fly Rod with a Lamson Waterworks Konic 1.5 fly reel and a premium floating fly line(sorry. Let's talk about the elephant in the room: Yes, these are Winston rods; and, no, they are not made in Winston's Twin Bridges, Montana, factory. However, the Vapors are fine, mid-price fly rods built to Winston's high quality and performance standards. Sporting a metallic olive-green finish and surprisingly nice components for the price, the Vapors look good out of the tube. On the water, the 81/2-foot, 5-weight I tried this past fall ... morehad a moderate-to-fast action without being overly stiff. The rod cast particularly well at short- to medium distances. A strong headwind coming off the lake thwarted my attempts to cleanly lay out any casts with real distance, but for a 5-weight the rod performed quite well even under these 6- to 7-weight conditions. One of the heavier rods in the series, such as the two-handed 6/7-weight, would likely have worked better in those circumstances, and with it maybe I would have caught one of the big browns cruising the beach.
