Benchill size 3/0 vintage gut eye salmon fly. This fly may well be by HARDY'S. As it appears to be tied on one of their patent oval wire hooks, and is very much in their style. The fly probably dates from about 1920. And is in excellent condition without any of the fading so often found of the blue in this classic Tay pattern. Tested in Water, U.S. Patent 2154756, Canada Patent 386119 then the back is marked Note- When used in stream for Trout and Salmon, cast across stream and allow current to pull on line and fly into position- then hold. The current and special Shimmer Fly will do the rest. When used for trolling the depth of Shimmer Fly is very important. First try 50 ft. of line- then 75 ft. and so on. Elm Sporting Goods Co. I obtained this over 25 years ago and have admired it ever since. This is a vintage 12 piece fly set from the early 60's. How do I know it is from the early 1960's? Last year I was looking at it. And took the base with the flies out of the display box. I noticed someting pressing the middle of the white display part, looked under it and found a Chicago(I believe) News Paper with funnies and advertising. One of the articles was a current(at that time) story about President Kennedy visiting his wife at the Hospital after the death of their 10 year old son. This event occured in 1963. Nice collectible piece from 50 years ago. All 12 lures(complete set) are new old stock and unused. The case is in good condition for a plastic piece from 5 decades ago. This is a vintage lot of fishing flies in a worn leather book. It is sold in as found condition. I know very little about flies. So please review all photos. The flies look to have been unused and they have definite age, as this was pulled out of a very old estate. There is a total of 30 pieces with one being a Martin from Italy fishing lure. VERY LARGE 10/0 SALMON FLY A large vintage 10/0 Salmon fly. Fiery Brown" of which there are 4 different variations, Hales example is quite simple but being originally an Irish pattern the other variations are difficult to track down and the exact patterns vary though all carry these basic colours except for the red horns on this fly within the wings, the fly displays very nice colours and i am sure it is unused, a very nice tying which is in mint condition. This is a very old Classic salmon fly pattern The Mystery, grey hackle and a pink tinge to the body colour. The hook is interesting it is a size 4/0 Limerick in the bend and incorporates the Cholmondeley-Pennell design. The hook shank is turned up slightly so that the eye will raise the line slightly to be in line with the body of the fly rather than underneath it. Size 4/0
