Offered is a box of six large Hardy Brothers salmon dry flies of the La Branche Pink Lady pattern. Tied in the collaboration of the famous early 20th Century American fly fishermen/fly tyers Edward Ringwood Hewitt(1866-1957) and George Michel Lucien La Branche(1875- From A Fly Fishing History by Dr. Andrew N. Herd: After Wood. The focus of salmon fishing development moved to America. Three men were to pioneer a new breakthrough: Hewitt, La Branche and Monell. Their inspiration came from none other than Theodore Gordon, who tied dry flies for salmon some time before 1903. Although La Branche proved that salmon would take just about any dry fly, he developed a special series ... moreof palmer hackled flies for the purpose, which rode high on their hackle points. LaBranche was later to compare the patterns to bottle brushes. And the trio settled on four patterns: the Colonel Monell, Soldier Palmer, Pink Lady Palmer, and the Mole. Despite Gordon, Monell, Hewitt and LaBranche's pioneering work, the dry fly was not popularised until the 1930s. When Lee Wulff revisited the whole problem of floating flies for salmon, and indulged in some major design work. The result was the Gray Wulff, a pattern which was so successful that it encouraged the inventor to develop the White Wulff and the Royal Wulff. The three patterns still form the mainstay of many fishermen's dry fly boxes. The dry fly method works well for salmon, anywhere where fish are present in large quantities, where a sighted fish can be accurately fished to, or in water temperatures over 60° Fahrenheit, which may explain why it is not so successful in Northern Europe. Twelve fully dressed gut eyed salmon flies mainly in their original packaging with contemporary handwriting as shown in the photos. All doubles. Comprising: Childers(see writing on packaging dated 1888'two patterns for Natasqhuan' sizes 5 and 5 Prince Charlie(see writing on packaging) sizes 5 and 5 Silver Grey(see writing on packaging) sizes 5 and 5 Spean Flies(see writing on packaging dated 1888) sizes 5 and 6 Cock Robin sizes 5 and 5 Durham Ranger size 5 Jock Scott size 5(with Indian Crow in the tail) These flies are all from the same source. The condition of the book is generally very good.There is a little surface marking to the back cover.There are no inscriptions other than the pencil signature of Mr.Morris.The fly is unused and I can supply a letter of provenance if required. Mr.David Morris was a river keeper.I think on the River Itchen,and when I met him in 1993 he was moving from his cottage.He invented the fly pattern'Morris Special' and I would think would have tied for a small clientele of anglers,customers and associates.He is I think mentioned in one or two books. A NICE COLLECTION OF VINTAGE TACKLE Firstly a Vintage Richard Wheatley of England"Ronalds Companion" showing the full seasons flies for each month and a pouch opposite to take the fly. When purchased the wallet would have had a fly coordinating to the description on the left page. The booklet itself is in very good condition as seen in the pictures. The exterior wallet is in a poor condition, there is a small tear on the top edge of the flap, it can be seen in the pictures. Also included is a Hardy 7" Salmon fly box, this is a very early example with the Made in England stamped on the inside of the box at the bottom of the clip plate. The box has the Hardy Bros Badge on the lid, a rare box in a 7" size. There are some dents and scratches to the box, please bare in mind that it is ... moreold, it is fully functional with no badly sprung clips, they will all hold a fly securely, the box opens and closes ok. There are also the Hardy casts pictured and a"punjab" wire trace from Hardy, the packet is in very poor shape and there are two wire traces so i cannot say if these are the genuine Hardy traces. In the fly box are a number of vintage flies and brand new fulling mill flies on the right hand plate except for the top row which are vintage. A hand made box and wallet. Retaining their paper"Hardy's" tags; circa 1932. Hardy Bros. Ltd. Fishing Rod and Tackle Makers, ALNWICK, ENGLAND/ The box measures approximately 3-1/8 by 2-3/4 by 1-1/4 inches. These quite large old flies are a bit under 1-1/4 inches from eye to curve of shank. Inscribed(at the Alnwick workshop) in fountain pen ink on back edge of the box: 5465. 4- ORANGE. FLY. SIZE. 2. SKS. I earlier sold a box of 6 of the same size of Grey Palmer flies that were also#d 5465. These flies were bought by a Colorado Rocky Mountains fisherman. Here we have an old Vintage House of Hardy fly box full of seatrout and salmon flies. There are 75 flies in the box with quite a lot looking to be unused all the rest look very good to use, all traditional patterns singles, doubles and trebles. There is some scattered wear and rubbing.Four small margin tears and the page edges may show margin trimming and edge loss in places.The plate of J.W.Dunne and Refracta flies shows a horizontal fold line.A few of the text pages show some spotting and fairly light age toning.The colour plates look to be mostly free from the spotting.The Salmon lures which includes the Norsk lures(Plate 14) shows the odd fairly minor mark.
