A superb and rare vintage brown leather fly fishing storage box with about 86 flies by I believe Abercrombie& Fitch although there is no makers name on the piece. The box is to hold your flies and line for fly fishing. It consists of 4 separate trays to hold the flies. There are flies of all sizes including some stunning salmon flies. The leather box is in good condition with only a side piece of leather that is unstitched. It could clean up very well with some TLC. The box has a lock but there is no key. It is in good used condition with some light wear(see clear picture to decide before bidding) It is a twisted gut eyed salmon fly and is on good japanned hook and is over 2.5 inches in length. This is a pretty example of a classic salmon fly"Red Shrimp" with a series brown then red then brown hackles on a body is wound with black the red silk held by silver wire; the throat is embellished by a single jungle cock eyed hackle; the eye end of the fly is sealed with black varnish. The hook measures 32 mm from the eye to the apex of the bend. Although I have marked this as"used" This appears to have never been used. This hand tied fly is quite old. It dates to approximately the 1920's- 1940's. It was well made from what appears to be quality supplies. It does show a good deal of aging now. There's discoloration in feathers which are rather weak or slightly brittle. Overall it's held up fairly well I suppose. But it's definitely not in any shape to be cast in the river or into the hungry jaws of any fish you'd hope to catch! I don't think it'd do real well under any kind of pressure. A very rare find in 8" size. A lovely box to continue using or display in a collection. Also included are the vintage salmon flies. These are almost all used flies with some large patterns included, long to give you a gauge of size, all others are gauged from size 8 up to 9/0 almost all hooks are black Japanned and almost all have oval wire, altogether there are 31 salmon flies, 12 gut eyed(4 missing eyes) and 19 steel eyed, 12 up eyed and 7 down, i have included lots of pictures so please look carefully at each flies condition. A good catcher in its day and a must try on any river. 2 versions exist one from Hale and one from the Rev.P.S.Wilkinson. Probably the first fly to have an all tinsel body. Condition is good with a nice gut eye. Oval wire hook. size 1 or 1.1/4"
