Vintage Bamboo Fly Rod (H&I "Steel Core" 9')
This is a H&I"Steel Core" fly rod. It is supposed to be 9' when assembled. First the good- The butt section was stripped down. Re-wrapped with the correct thread color and spirals. The ferrule and winding check were both re-Japaned" The stripper guide is the original red agate guide. It has 3 gloss coats of Spar varnish. The bad- Both tips are short. You can see the steel cable sticking out of one of them. One is 1.5" short and the other is about 6" short. The mid section has been stripped down and is ready to have the ferrules re-Japaned and guides re-wrapped(you can see the ghosting where they were) It is full length. No bag/tube. Shipped in cardboard tube. I will say that I have been messing around with old rods for 25+ years and this is only the third"Steel Core" I have seen in person(the others ... morewere both in Utica at a restaraunt hanging on the wall) This would be an easy project rod as 30% of the work is already done.

Beautiful Bamboo South Bend Fly Rod. 3-piece rod. Says 55-8 1/2. I would describe this is in very good shape. All guides are there and the wraps are very tight. Clean finish. Cork grip is very cleen. Reel seat is nice and clean. Butt section measures 34.25" Middle and tip sections measure 34.75" Ferrules are very clean and the finish is great given it's ago. This can be fished tomorrow or would make a nice display piece. The rod includes the rod sock. But it is not a South Bend rod sock. This is a very cool Heddon fly rod. I think back in the day a company called FOLSOM made some of there better rods. It is a 1520 8 1/2 feet 3 piece down locking reel seat. Comes with a folding landing net. Bag, aluminum tube that says HEDDON'S DOWAGIAC on the cap.The folding net I could not find on the web but it seams like it comes from the same time, the writing on the net says IDEAL on the but section. Most of my fly fishing is done in the salt water, so some of the info could be off a bit. Its hard to see in the pics, but folsom is written obeve the grip on the blank with#1520 under it.

VINTAGE RARE MONTAGUE CHUBB 1800s SPLIT BAMBOO FLY FISHING ROD WITH CASE This auction is for a vintage refinished four piece 9 ½’ Montague Chubb fly rod with original form fitting case. There are no Montague identifications however this was common in these early Montague Chubb rods. The reel seat. Winding check and ferrules are characteristic of Montague Chubb rods. The 5 ¼” reel seat would indicate the rod was manufactured between 1875-1899. All sections measure 39” I would estimate that it would balance with a five-six weight fly line. The 5 ¾” and aforementioned sliding reel seat are in very good functional condition. There are four snake eye guides on the mid and tip sections and a stripper guide on the bottom section. The rod fits together perfectly when assembled. It does have a natural fishing set which was not at all ... moreuncommon with vintage rods of this age. It will not affect the casting or use of the rod. The form fitting felt lined case has severally frayed over the years and is missing its tie strings. I meticulously stripped the old varnish. It was complete from Paul Young with the exception of installing the guides and applying the finish. The big thing in 1955 was the foul proof guides which is what was used on this rod. For someone collecting Paul Young rods this might be your only chance to ever get one of these for your collection. I have only heard of one other para 11 so they must be scarce. I know the 3 piece PHY rods are a bit more difficult to come by. Note in the photos that it has the standard seat. And butt cap, but also has a spiral grip for finger and thumb locations. RARE J. L. (John) Weir & Son Bamboo Fly Fishing Rod; 8' for a 6 Weight Line
J. L. John) Weir& Son varnished 8' for a 6 weight bamboo fly rod from the late sixties/early seventies in excellent condition. Labeled M801.22.8. J. L. Weir& Son were a small Western rodmaker located in Los Gatos CA. Their output was small and seldom do these rods find their way to market. Typical of Western fly rods of the day designed to fish larger waters. This rod has a'crisper' action than similar rods from some of the prominent Eastern makers like C. F. Charles) Orvis, H. L. Hiram) Leonard, James(Jim) Payne, Everett Garrison and others. 9 snake guides with an agate'stripper' J. L. Weir& Son rods had a couple of unique and distinctive features; Wood reel seat filler finished in oil rather than varnish. This made it very easy to'freshen' as needed without refinishing the entire reel seat. The Sterling ... moresilver hook-keeper is actually embedded in the front of the cork grip. This spares the windings and bamboo from any damage and also provides a'resting' place for your dry fly without crushing the hackles against the bamboo as with more traditional hook-keepers. The rod bag is heavy denim to protect this fine rod. A gorgeous rod with very light wheat colored shafts, brown silk guide wraps tipped black at grip, ferrules, tips(1 tip has two wraps of black and the other only 1, this allows differentiating so tips can be switched from time-to-time) The varnish is perfect. The ferrules are nickel silver. I believe the butt cap, reel seat hardware and grip-check are aluminum. The butt-cap is labeled WEIR& SON. The original labeled(label has some scratches and is covered with archival quality transparency to prevent any further scratching) aluminum tube and brown denim rod sock are included. It consists of eight one foot sections that. When put together, will make a seven foot or a six foot fly rod. The rod itself is unmarked. The rod butt has a down sliding reel seat and a 4 1/2" sheet cork grip. All sections have a Green silk winding with Red accents. Each section, except the butt, have one snake guide, plus tip sections have two different types of tip tops. The bamboo is sound, but needs a revarnish, and some of the ferrules need reglued. MADE BY Wes Jordan 7 1/2' models were only sold 3 years: 1969.70,71(retired) According to the catalogs of the period Wes Jordan"worked and inspected" this model. He in fact earned a commission on every Wes Jordan rod sold and his pride and expertise ensured that he spent his time on these(more than average rod) This rod is from 1970. Overall VG shape with only notable flaw being a tiny hook dig on one tip. It literally looks to be mostly the bakelite that is affected. The close up photo shows entire image enlarged. Many people probably would not even notice this flaw unless it was pointed out. Hook dig located between 3rd and 4th guide from ferrule(see last photo) I've relisted this rod with much lower cost(it was purchased BIN for $950, and after I noticed the flaw I let buyer know before I shipped, and we agreed to cancel ... moretransaction. All 3 sections full length and with matching serial numbers. All original condition with no restoration. Goodwin Granger Co. Victory Bamboo Rod 9 foot 3 piece 2 tips (Needs Refinishing)
NO RESERVE AUCTION Goodwin Granger Victory. 9 foot 3 piece with 2 tips. All pieces equal length. This rod needs some help to really be fished again. Everything is present, including the sock and cardboard rod tube. The ferrules pop and are tight. No clicking. The eyes on the mid section are a bit loose but presently in tact. In my opinion this rod should be taken down to bare bamboo, re-wrapped, and varnished. The metal up locking reel seat works well and aside from a couple pieces of cork missing at the end the cork handle it is in good used condition. This rod has been refinished and re-wrapped in the distant past as you will notice the original Jasper and black wraps on the base are not the same as around the eyelets. This rod has great bones and could be fantastic with a little work. The tips are a slightly darker color and one tip does ... morenot have the proper ferrule. Therefore, since I am not the original owner I am led to believe two new tips have been made for this rod when the rewrapping occurred. All pieces have the same wrappings and they remind me of an Orvis wrap. The tips are very well done and do not need any work, all wraps are tight and look to have never been fished. I am an honest seller. And my goal is to put these rods and reels back on the rivers and streams to be used rather than collect dust. I try to find good quality product and take high quality photos to let the buyer know what they are getting. I also try as best I can to let you know everything I know about the rod. Vintage Post WWII Sakurai/Sakura Split Bamboo Fly/Cast Fishing Rod Kit
This auction is for a vintage five piece Post WWII Sakurai split bamboo fly and casting rod combination kit with wooden storage box. It is in very good original condition. The kit includes the rod. A genuine silk plaited line, and other random accessories(all shown in the photographs) The wooden box includes an internal storage area to store additional accessories. There is a Sakura decal on the handle and on the wooden box. The rod can be assembled into a three piece 8’ fly rod or a two piece 5.6’ casting rod. Four sections measure 33” and one tip section is 27 ½” The 6 ¾” cork handle is in great condition. There are two snake eye guides on the fly rod mid section and three on one tip section and two on the second. The casting tip section has two guides. There is a stripper guide and hook keeper on the bottom section. The 33” tip ... moresection is not original to the rod but fits perfectly. All of the sections have the distinct“pop” sound when pulled apart. The male ferrule when inserted into the casting end of the reel seat does not slide in completely but it is a secure fit. There is a slight set which will not affect the casting of the rod. The wooden storage box is slightly weathered. And one of the hinges is loose. The honey-colored cane and varnish finish are excellent. The casting action is awesome and this classic wand would be right at home on creeks, streams, and lakes. It will also make a great display.

This auction is for the bamboo fly rods that are mostly not complete rods and require some repair as shown and described. The knives in the photo are NOT PART OF THE AUCTION. They are only in the photo to separate the individual rods for individual identification of the 6 various rods shown. All of these rods have the cork stained, some may have a guide or two missing or need rewrapping and all should be refinished to really make them nice. Also, when I describe the reel seat for these rods, if I say they are nice, that means they work but could still need a little cleaning. I will describe the rods from the top rod in the photo to the bottom. First Rod(top rod in photo) has three pieces with the tip being broken. The butt and mid sections are both 36 and 3/4 inches long and the tip is only 21 and 3/4 inches long. Actually, the finish on ... morethis rod is very nice but does need to have the butt guide rewrapped and it is missing one of the guides on the mid piece. All ferrules are nice and fit together. The reel seat is also nice on this rod. The only identification that I can find is that it says BONNEVILLE on the butt section. The second rod(first one down from top) has only two pieces that are both 37 inches long. The butt of this rod says SOUTH BEND QUALITY TACKLE BAIT COMPANY. The ferrules are nice but the mid section is missing the male ferrule on the bottom end. Reel seat is nice. The third rod(second one down from top) also has only two pieces. The butt is 37 and 1/8 inches long and the mid section is 36 and 7/8 inches long. The cork has a small amount of pitting. The ferrules are nice and fit together and the reel seat is nice as well. It say HIAWATHA on the butt section of this rod. The fourth rod(third one down from top) has three pieces with the tip section being broke. The butt and mid section of this rod measures 38 and 3/4 inches and the tip section measures only 33 and5/8 inches and is missing the tip guide. It's my pleasure to offer at auction a Very Nice 1936-1938 HEDDON NO.400"CHIEFTAIN" 5-1/2 FT. 2-PIECE SPLIT BAMBOO BAIT CASTING ROD WITH CORRECTLY LABELED BAG& SCARCE FACTORY HANDLE LABEL. First introduced by Heddon as"The No.4 Rod" in 1913, named the"Chieftain" in 1924 and would be redesignated the No.400 in 1933. It's one of the few models from James Heddon's Sons to sell continuously through 1952, a testimony to its popularity. Because this example is equipped with three guides on the tip section(standard for this model by 1936) and carries the Classic era rodshaft markings(last used in 1938) we know it was only built in 1936 to 1938. I've added a photo of the original listing from Heddon's 1937 catalog. This is a Vintage 1925 26 Heddon#6 Jim Heddon's Favorite Split Bamboo 5ft Bait Casting Rod with Bag& Tube. It's in excellent refinished condition. The refinisher did a fantastic job on this rod. Although it's missing the famous Hedden script from the rod shaft it does have the Heddon's Made in USA logo on the reel seat. The reel seat also identifies this as being either a 1925 or 1926 rod as this was the only time this"Hold Fast" reel seat was in use. The red bag is not original to the rod nor is the tube but the tube is of the correct era and has A.A.W. Co. Peerless Newark. N.J. All agate line guides are crack free and tight and ties are in tact and solid. This rod Looks new with a fantastic shine. This rod is very hard to find and in this condition is even harder. There is a South Bend decal and I would say this is a model 357 or 359 based on the taper of the rod. The bottom section measures 34 ½” Mid is 32 ½” and tip section is 28 ¼” This was originally an 8 1/2’ rod. I would estimate the fly line weight at a solid four or five. The 6” cork handle is fully functional. I repaired a small chip with wood filler. The reel seat is missing the end cap. There are no snake eye guides on the rod. The sections fit together perfectly. There is a slight natural set in the tip section. I meticulously stripped the old varnish. Orvis Impregnated Deluxe 7' 2 pc. 2 tips Bamboo fly rod
Early 1960's rod. The"Deluxe" model. Impregnated 7' HDH line specified, casts a DT4 or WF5 with accuracy and authority. Two matching tips, ferrules still nice and tight, produce that lovely"pop" when disassembled. Was recently re-handled by famous rod builder Marc Aroner, as the original cork and rings were deteriorating. Cap and ring are custom turned and blued nickel silver. Only other change he made was to use a slightly larger stripper guide more suitable to modern lines. Ferrules and tips are completely original and straight, bag and case are original. This rod is a delight to cast and fights fish with authority.

The rod handled nicely with both, but I had more fun with the 6 weight line. The rod measures 9 foot. including the handle) in overall length. The fittings and slip ring reel seat on the butt section are in silver colored anodized(nickel silver) metal. The butt ring appears agate lined, and the tip eye is also agate lined, both agate are in good shape with no cracks. All of the snake guides are present and well ... moreattached. The garnet red wraps are in excellent condition, please view photos, as I have provided photos of each wrap from butt to tip. The intermediate wraps are in excellent condition. The ferrule is a good snug fit and has a ferrule cap. The varnish appears to have retained its original finish. The reel holder is stamped“Hardy’s Reg Universal Reel Holder“ The reel butt is stamped"Hardy Bros. Ltd. Alnwick England" To HRM King George” The serial number is 64279A. Just above the handle the rod has“N/B" Regd. Trademark Palakona" and"The Perfection" handwritten in ink. The rod has its' original bag. Which, it is in well used condition and ferrule plug, the rod will be shipped in PVC tube. The rod has had very little use. As can be seen in the photos of the handle and the cloth bag. Please note the Hardy Perfection reel in the photo is“not for sale” It is included to show the balance of rod. It has a lovely feel when held. VINTAGE SOUTH BEND 59-9 SPLIT BAMBOO FLY FISHING ROD 9 FOOT
Up for bidding is this Vintage South Bend 59-9 Split Bamboo Fly Fishing Rod There are four pieces with an extra tip. There is a South Bend decal with red lettering above the handle. This fly rod is in beautiful used condition with some wear to the cork handle. Each piece measures 36 3/4" long. There are no missing line eye guides and the wrapping appears to be very solid condition. I believe it is original. It comes in the original cloth bag, which is in good condition. Vintage L.L. Bean Bamboo Fly Rod signed Bean's 110. Letter B is not so clear, i got it as a gift and never used it. The rod has 4 parts all together. There is a possibility that either the handle or the rest have been repaired. The reason i say this is because the main piece has a red color and the three pieces are gold and black. The three pieces together are 9 feet 1/2 in and there is an extra edge piece. It comes with a cloth bag and aluminium case. Good luck and happy bidding.

Problems: One of the tip sections is 4" short; the female ferrule on the midsection needs to be reset-the glue has dried out; the full length tip section has a fishing set.
