I thought fly fishing was going to be my new hobbie. But as it turns out I didn't make time for it. I did make time to do a ton of research and ended up buying the best equipment money can buy. This entire set up has only seen the light of day once, and beside that it has been kept in an air conditioned closet. Everything in this listing is new or used only once. I need the money, so my loss is your gain. What you are bidding on is: Hatch 5 plus Monsoon Fly Reel(Silver and Green in color) I paid $500 dollars for it a year ago. 5 plus means it can be used for 5-7 weight line and rod. It comes fully loaded with 7 weight Sceintific angler weight forward line and is rigged up using the salt water fly fishing system shown on Danscustomflys.com most the the 20 flys that come with this set up where made by him as well. I payed $80 for the fly ... moreline/backer and had it profesionally rigged up. I had the fly rod custom made. It is 9' piece 7 weight custom made by Ed Mc Shea. I payed $180 dollars for it and I have a list of every part used on it and the blank itself is still under warantee. It comes with a custom made blue jean bag as well. It will be shipped in PVC tubing. The 20 flys are all different styles(which average out to be over $5.00 each) 16 of which are salt water flys and 4 are fresh water. Most the salt water flys are made my Dans custom flys and have stainless steel hooks and epoxy resin over the body of the fly so they are made to last. It also comes with some braided loops for attaching the leader onto the fly line and a 9 foot tappered leader still in the package. I figure with shipping I payed close to $950.00 for everything. And with this package you are getting everything and it is fully rigged up and ready to go.

SO. The good news is that technically this reel IS still functional. It comes with line and backing(though the line is pretty beat at this point I think) and it still retrieves line just fine. The problem is that the drag is destroyed. What happened is that several years ago after purchasing the reel. My Sharkskin line, being textured, chewed a notch into the reel frame. It was and still is my opinion that this should never happen but apparently it does happen b/c I've since talked to a local fly shop owner that has a high end Abel reel that this happened with-the Sharkskin created a notch in his frame as well. Reel manufacturers blame it on the Sharkskin and say they can't do anything about the fact that you now have a six hundred dollar reel with a sharp edge(whatever. Their prerogative) The quick fix for the reel owner is to fill ... morethe notch with epoxy, let it harden, and keep fishing. However, another local fly shop owner, trying to be over-the-top helpful, wanted to do what he could to get me a brand new frame(which he ended up doing at cost.love that guy) but by THEN, they no longer made the Monsoon frame. He ended up getting me the newer Finatic frame-which is actually compatible with Monsoon spools. All I had to do was switch the Monsoon spool to the new Finatic frame, switch out the drag, and I'd be good as new. But I'm what the p.c. crowd might call mechanically"differently-abled. Even after watching an on-line video of how to do it. I apparently installed the drag backwards and then fished it hard for about year. This, I can assure you, will destroy your drag. So in the end what I ended up with instead of a totally functional(yet epoxied) frame with a notch was a far less functional whole reel without a notch but also without a drag. And I can't fix it. You are looking at a gently used Hatch Monsoon 7 Plus Large Arbor Fly Reel. The reel is loaded with backing and SA 8 weight intermediate tip fly line. It is currently set up for right hand retrieve but it can be converted to left hand wind. I fished this reel on a few trips and it has been safely stored in my office since. I have tried to photograph the reel in enough detail that you can judge the condition for yourself. This is a true auction with no reserve. So you could get a great reel at a great price.
