Bobbin24 Special Antique Mother& Babe Bone Lace Bobbin English* Circa 1840* by Joseph Haskins This exceptionally carved antique bone* lace bobbin is from the collection of Christine and David Springett and is illustrated in the lower color plate on p. vii(4th bobbin from left) of their book Success to the Lace Pillow. It was made by Joseph Haskins. Widely acknowledged as the best of the English lace bobbin makers. His bobbins have a very distinctive style and he's noted for especially ornate turning. This bobbin is called a'mother and babe' as it has a smaller decorated bobbin within a cage on the shank. The condition is excellent with no chips. Cracks or other damage and it has a nice old patina. The spangle contains antique handmade glass beads and it measures 4 5/8" long. One end shows nicely worn old paint on wood in random colors while the other end is a dense hard plastic that provides a nice base when stood on end. These have been stored for years and all show varying degrees of wear. Making them just the thing for all sorts of country and industrial decor projects from candle holders to shelf supports. It consists of hand-sewn tiny faceted glass beads throughout the lace as well as the scalloped edge. There are some thread breaks in areas at the very top edge. As well as a little in the main body, but it is not so terrible that it detracts. It is very rare to find beaded lace. Vt Antique Handmade Milanese Bobbin Lace Collar Punto Milano 18th Century 1700's This is a wonderful early piece of bobbin lace. Likely dating to the second half of the 18th Century. There has been one identification of the lace as Punto de Milano from this period. But I'm not certain who made that identification as far as the dating goes. There is a similar lace in Levy's History of Lace. Top picture of plate 209. I'm guessing some may speculate it could be Flemish, among other things it has bars running behind the lace as do the Flemish examples within the same portion of this reference book. I'm an ongoing student of lace. And offering the piece as identified with the additional references I can offer. So, as always these are just opinions on the identification as Milanese vs. Flemish. This is a stole type collar that ... moregets wider as it goes around the neckline. There is a pleat sewn into it where the lace had been folded to accomodate the curve. I'm uncertain if this was actually a functional head piece with long lappets or collar piece or both? The edging was attached separately and whip stitches can be seen in one of the magnified photos. The condition is quite remarkable. I see no holes or tears and no staining. There is a soft sheen to the flax threads when the light hits it just right. I did find one or two very small breaks. Under magnification some loose threads can be seen here or there, but no real visible flaws to the naked eye(at least not mine! This is untreated lace. Collector quality. Measures approx 48 inches around inside neck. 54 inches around the outside. Width varies from approx 3 inches to 8-1/2 inches at widest point. One shuttle, 8 Spindles, One Bobbin
Pre-WWII These 8 antique loom spindles. One rare shuttle and one bobbin came from the Brown Shoe Factory in Brunswick, ME. They are all hardwood composition. The spindles have metal inserts in the shaft. All the spindles have holes. Used for yarn plugs. The shuttle is maple with steel points, very smooth finish. The patina on all of them is fab. Untouched and just as it was when I collected them at the plant closing in 1965-6, IIRC. They are leftovers from when I outfitted an old barn conversion kitchen with spindle ends on all the cabinet doors. Really striking and unique. From Urban Hobo designs. People say WoW! I'm giving away my secrets here; but this is an insanely great use of these antique spools. You get a knob off each end. We used over 40 knobs in that kitchen. Lots of different style ends. Really unique décor touches. ... moreSome of these spindles we used as" primitive swag holders" with fabric draped over one at each corner of the window. This treatment never fails to get compliments. The easiest way to mount them is with double-ended 4" X 3/8" lag screws. One end into the spool(you will need to glue a dowel in the shaft hole and pre-drill it) and the other end into the wall. I would be pleased to communicate with the winner to insure they can be properly affixed as decorative elements. Others make candle holders out of these lovely wooden artifacts. For sale absolutely mint. Outstanding, unused victorian torchon lace. The length is incredible: 11 yards and 7 inches long. The width is about 2.25 inches. I believe, the style is torchon bobbin lace. It is 100% linen, I guarantee(I can tell the difference)The color is pure white. I was my great grandmothers, and it is been in the family for a long time. This lace was folded in her closet for so many years. She brought it from Belgium more then a century ago. Pair of UNUSED pure linen fil pillow cases with AM monograms. Intricate pulled thread work and deep bobbin lace edge. This is wonderful quality pure linen fil. Fine floppy and heavy. There are some rust/storage marks as they have been carefully stored away for years never having been used. These marks will come out after a soak in oxy. At the moment they are a creamy white never having been washed. I have photographed them against a white sheet to show their colour. Sizes are about 31" x 32" The actual pillow case measures about 22½" x 23½" There is a 2½" border of linen fil with a beautiful pulled thread work all around. Another inch of linen onto which is sewn fine white bobbin lace about 1½" deep. Five mother of pearl buttons and hand sewn button holes. It is a thread dispensing bobbin/shuttle. It measures 3-1/4 inches wide x 2-7/8 inches high x about 1-1/4 inches thick. The base has a number impressed in the wood: 37.353. It is not marked with the maker, but others of this type where the maker was indicated were manufactured by either the R.B. Pratt Company or Riehl& Sons. The wood finish on one side of the bobbin is worn from use and looks a bit darker/duller on that side. The other side is lighter in color and very shiny as it still retains the surface finish. I wish I had more information on this beautiful doilly. I purchased it 15 years ago and was told it was a beautiful Bobbin Lace doilly made by Nuns. It is 17 inches long and 9" wide. It is off white or ecru in color and looks to be in perfect condtion to me. No tears. Loose areas, etc.

But still rather simple and natural in design, I think Mission style of the Arts and Crafts style movement– Color is a white– Would look fabulous on the heavy wooden furniture of the Mission Arts and Crafts period. Unusual lace technique– The border of this antique runner was said to be a type of lace by the experts on the ebay needlearts discussion board– There was debate as to the type of technique. Though. One thought that it was a Bobbin lace. But did not know if it was hand or machine made– Another thought it was Needle Lace– If experts can further give details on age. Early style history, or how these works were made, please let me know. The ovals are not delicate and thin as one normally thinks of lace– The ovals are heavy– maybe from a heavy natural ... morelinen– Each of the oval is approximately 1 inch long and approximately 3/4ths of an inch wide– Very dense– and they appear to take a lot of intricate work to create. This piece is a heavy natural fabric off white runner– this heavy bobbin or needle lace borders all 4 sides of the runner. Size: The border is deep– approx 3 inches on both sides. And approx 3 ½ inches on both ends. Complete size: is approx 43 inches long and 15 inches wide. Condition: There are no stains on this piece. But it is damaged, at one corner the interior heavy natural linen has detached from the lace and shows some fraying to the natural linen– approx 4” another spot at the this end shows the same type of damage, but smaller(approx 1” There is also a hole in the heavy natural linen interior that measures approx ½ by ½ inch.
