Lot of 4 Antique and Vintage wood and metal fly fishing reels
This lot of 4 early fishing reels includes 3 wood ones and one metal one. The wood fishing reels were made by hand turning the wood and are likely English. They are 3 7/8. 3 and just over 2 ½ inches in diameter. The largest one has a drag button on it and appears in the best condition. All three turn smoothly. The 3 inch one has a crack on the line holder and does not turn strait though it may just need to be tightened. We believe these date to the early 20 th century. The other reel is metal. Maybe iron and is 2 5/8 inches in diameter. The reel turns smoothly. It is marked Made in USA. We do not see a mark, but it may be a diamond reel based on the look. It has some rust on it.

This Martin model 38 Automatic Fishing reel was origionaly patented on October 10 1939 by Alfred D Maury as a model 27. Thru the years and several engineering changes or improvements as we like to call them it evolved into the model 38 in the early 1950.S. This reel works best with a 5 to 6 wt double taper line on an eight to eight and a half foot rod of the same weight.

You are bidding on two neat old fishing reels. The Fly Reel is an OCEAN CITY#35 made in the USA and a BERKLEY#425 spinning reel inspected and assembled in the USA with parts made in Japan. Both reels have seen heavy use and have paint scuffs. The spinning reel has masking tape on the spool indicating XL#4 RB#8. His opinion on the fly fishing rod based on what he sees- which is split bamboo, 4 sections(each about 34” long) six sided Carmel color and red& black thread plus the rod seat is stamped Congress Quality trade mark– after some research he found that the Congress Brand was marketed by Supplee-Biddle Hardware Company of Philadelphia, PA, in about 1903-1926 time frame. The case is also very nice but does have some marks and the Marlboro logo that was originally on it has been scribbled over with silver sharpie, because they are an evil tabaco company after all.
