2 Vintage MAYFLOWER Bamboo RODS ~FLY Fishing; SURF Fishing Pole + Box& some Accessories Let me start out by relating that I am not a fisher person. I received the rods as part of an inheritance. I was not able to ask any questions about the poles. Any information provided is taken from observation and what I was able to find on the net. The poles were thought to have been manufactured in Japan sometime between 1946 and 1970. Most historical information is written in Japanese. I don’t speak Japanese. The rods come in a light weight three hinged wooden box that has two metal closures that are present and functional. It is 39 inches long; 3 ¾ inches wide and 2 ¼ inches deep. The interior top of the box is split into 5 equal sections. In one section there appear to be 8 flys used for bait. The center section has a paper label that ... morerelates the following: High Class Mayflower The may flower brand fishing rod was made at the Oldest. Split Bamboo fishing rod work shop in JAPAN through the very best process of manufacturing with the latest technique. The bottom portion of the box is one open space. There are two items thought to be bobbers. There is a grid that is thought to be used for winding line. The rods appear to have been previously lovingly used. The lower portion of the surf pole is approximately 38 inches long. The grip is painted black. The Mayflower label is complete and unscratched. All whipping. Green and red is present, tight and bright. Metal work is bright with some micro scratching. The blue rubber butt is present, complete without damage. The upper portion of the pole is 35 ¾ inches making the pole 6 feet 1 ¾ inches when joined. There are three eyes. The tip is present and tight. All green whipping is present and tight. The second of two poles is thought to be in the same condition as the first. It is also thought to be approximately the same age as the first. I am unable to provide the exact age for either pole. I believe this one dates to the 1930’s-1940’s and is constructed of a hard fiber material with metal caps on both ends. Has a brown/ maroon color, the paper tag reads“Turner Bros. Wellington Ohio Fine Protection For Fishing Rods” measures approximately 49” long when completely closed, the short section measures 2 ¼” outside diameter and the long section measures 2” outside diameter, when completely opened it extends to approximately 76” long before the two pieces separate and it actually creates a vacuum as you close so you can adjust length. I tried to match the rods up by the color of the wrapping on the guides. One of the handle is marked with the Montague decal on both sides. Although it is chipped and a remains of a word that ends in m or n up the rod from the decal on one side. The other rods handle is unmarked. 2 Classic 9 1/2' Bamboo Fly Fishing Rods Both 3/1 For Restoration or Parts
These two 9 1/2' bamboo fly rods will offer special challenges to the restorer. The upper one in the pictures has decent varnish and the cane is sound. Needs three snake guides and a stripper, could use rewrapping on all guides. The cork grip is chewed up and needs to be replaced. This may be an Abbey& Imbrie rod-I can make out"New York" on the partial decal. The butt cap is stamped"MADE IN U.S.A. Unusual downlocking reel seat. The second rod is from Horrocks Ibbotson, model unknown. The varnish on this rod is severly alligatored, needs to be stripped. All snake guides are in place, but the rod needs a stripper guide and a tip-top. Cork and reel seat are in good condition, could use cleaning. Ferrules are good on both rods. Two for the price of one-how could it get better?

This is an Excellent condition copy of George W. Barnes' book"How to Make Bamboo Fly Rods" in the Dust Jacket. First Edition published by The Winchester Press in New York in 1977. Most of these bamboo rod building books were done in fairly small editions so they go out of print and become fairly scarce quickly. 7 1/4 X 10 1/4 inch format with 110 pages. For your consideration I am listing three vintage fiberglass fly fishing rods. These rods have their original eyelets and eyelet wrappings. The cork on the handles is in very nice condition. There is no structural damage on any of them. I will describe them as follows: A St Croix 2-piece fiberglass rod that is 7'5" long. The label came off this rod. But it is absolutely a St. Croix rod. This is the red rod that you see in the pictures. A Jorgensen 2-piece fiberglass rod that is 8'6" long. The label says: JORGENSEN FINEST QUALITY TUBULAR GLASS.
