Fran Betters Design Fly Tying Vise This vise was designed by legendary Catskill fly tier Fran Betters. And he tied commercially on one. Fran is the originator of the famous"Usual" dry fly, as well as the"Haystack" Now deceased, he was an institution on the West Branch of the AuSable, in NY. It is very well made, and easy to use, since it can be repositioned to suit the tiers' work area and posture. The jaw operates using a cam mechanism, and is both functional and secure. While I don't know what hook sizes he advertised it to be capable of holding, it is apparent that it will easily hold flies as small as 24, and as large as 6/0. The Nor Vise is a rotational fly tying vise of unique design. The hook is positioned on a perfect centerline axis so that the hook can be spun to wrap dubbing. Hackle, or thread, much faster Its precision ball bearings and heavy brass hubs give it a good feel. The small jaws will handle a wide range of hooks. If you want to tie flies smaller than#26 or saltwater flies, you can get different jaws, as well as various attachments. There are numerous videos on YouTube, by Nor Vise and others, showing how to tie different flies. It is used but in excellent shape. I got it from the estate of a club member and decided to stick with my HMH.

Vintage Fly Fishing Tying Tackle Box w/ Herter’s Vise, 3 Reels, Lines, Necks
Vintage Fly Fishing Tying Tackle Box w/ Herter’s Vise. 3 Reels, Lines, Necks This is a vintage box that can’t quite decide what it is. It’s chock full of stuff. But is it a fly tying kit or a fly fishing tackle box? It has a nice old Herter’s vise. Vintage bobbins, a vintage hackle guard, a#3 grizzly hackle half neck, a couple of brown India necks, and miscellaneous materials, threads, etc. but it also has 3 fly reels, a couple of fly lines, tippet material, line cleaner, and more. The automatic fly reel is a Shakespeare 1845 Model GE that seems to be working just fine with a strong spring. The second reel is a vintage Bakelite L.L. Bean. I’ve actually never seen this model! It has a really nice mottling of red in the brown Bakelite and the only markings are“L.L. Bean Inc. and“Freeport. ME. Unfortunately it looks like it may have been dropped ... moreas a small part of one rim is missing and there’s a crack in the back plate. HOWEVER, as I said, I’ve never seen this one and can’t find it anywhere, so I think it’s probably worth having in your collection. The last reel is metal and in good shape. There aren’t any markings on it I can find. But it seems perfectly serviceable and ready to either take fishing or as spooling reel as you clean a line. I’m not sure what the weights the line(s) are. They may be a shooting head and running line. But you’ll have to decide. Please see the pictures for a more complete description and in case I’ve missed or forgotten to mention something. Also. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions or for more pictures if you can’t see something. I’m sure that I haven’t included all the information you’d like to have, but am happy to help, and perhaps not the best photographer. For some reason the camera flash made it look a little more red in some of the pictures, so I’ve tried to upload a couple both with and without the flash.
