vintage Cortland scissors/pliers for fly tying, pin on with retracting string
I buy vintage linens at local estate auctions to pass them along to you. A recent auction brought a bonanza of great items and some wonderful surprises. This is a small pair of Cortland scissors/pliers that measure 4" long. They come attached to a small pin with a retracting string. So you can pin it to your shirt and have them always at hand- just pull down the string to use them. The blades have 3/4" notched ends that come together tightly, and up along the blade one side is notched. These close well and would hold tightly. They are clean and shiny, with no dings or bending in the blades. The pin is circular, with the front marked'Cortland' on a shiny metal disk, and the rest of the case is gray-green plastic. The retracting mechanism is strong and active. I really wasn't sure if these were for fly tying or for use ... moreby nurses! If you recognize them please write in. This is a slightly used fly tying vise from Gander Mountain. This vise is in great shape and works perfectly. I was using it to tie up until yesterday when I found a great deal on a rotary vise. Otherwise I had no plans to get rid of it and was very happy with it. This would be perfect for beginners or any level really. Developed by George Le onard Herter in 1 952 as an alternative to fly tying vises that were of inferior quality. Used by him to devel op dozens of patterns including the black nose dace. Wrongly attributed to Art Flick. Used by Jacques Le onard Herter to ti e award winning patterns that ca ught fish. And did not simply decorate your hat. If you reco g nize this. You know the Herter's cat alog. I acquired this recently in a lot of materials. But it is not quite suitable for beginn ers in my upcoming class. So it is going on ebay. Used, it actually works.
