An alloy reel with perforated spool flange on the handle side, telephone style spool latch and ribbed brass foot, with a 3 5/8" diameter and 1 1/4" wide spool. Stamped on the tail plate"Made by Hardy Bros LTD– England" and"Fly Reel– 3 3/4" though the reel measures to just 3 5/8" The tail plate rim features a knurled brass tension screw, with a dual click pawl system that can be set for either right or left hand wind. The initials"J.S. ... moreare stamped inside the drum housing, for reel builder James Smith, who built reels between 1908 and 1960. Condition is VG+ to Ex- with tightly fitting spool having no wobble, crisp sounding check/click, and very light wear with no pitting usually associated with alloy reels. Please view all the photos. RH wind with free spinning Ebonite handle. Correct full length smooth brass foot measures 3 1/2" long& 5/8" wide. Weight is approx. 12 oz. Leading has aged to a beautiful bronze/silver patina. Some minor line grooves to the corners of the usual pillar as can be seen in pictures#3& 4. Reel is very tight and in excellent mechanical condition, with no repairs, no cracks, no problems. I have far too many fly rods and reels and have decided to sell my most collectible and keep just a few as I seldom fish anymore. The line is at least a 50.00 item if purchased new and a Reel value in this condition CA residents add 9% sales tax. But we sell Hardy in the shop and we were assured by a regional rep and Hardy collector from Hardy/Greys that"A" was made in England( just look at the serial numbers on the foot on the new Perfects or Bougles. They are all"A" Just because it doesn't say"Made in England" Doesn't mean it wasn't ... morebecause at the time the time of transition, reels were being made in both Alnwick(A serial numbers) and Korea(J and R serial numbers) The"A" doesn't stand for Asia. They probably had plenty of inventory left over and needed to know where all products were being made or for inventory control, I really don't know, maybe they did it for uniformity.

The reel is in very good condition with just a little discoloration to the finish in the center. It shows handling scratches seen mostly on the unpainted side. HARDY PERFECT FLY REEL -- 3-7/8 -- Older Model
This is a Hardy Perfect 3-7/8 fly reel. I am not sure of the vintage but would guess this reel may be from the 50s. This Perfect has ribbed brass foot. The line guide pillar has only a slight amount of wear in enamel finish only. It is a right hand wind reel. Mechanically and cosmetically excellent. Except that a former owner lightly scratched the intials RWH(possibly for right wind hand? on back plate. Reel is in excellent operating condition with a strong drag. Making the reels manufacture date approx. 1898-1908. In our other auctions. There's also a 3" S. Allcock Ltd. reel called"the MARVEL" that dates to the same time frame as this Sunbeam reel. There are also a couple of old tins packed with various old flies as well as a newer high quality fish gaf. A nice Sheffield hunting/ fishing knife and then lastly a German made Solingen fishing tool with sheath. These were all owned by a Bitish military officer that took his fly fishing seriously and like all serious anglers. He took care of his tools. Vintage Hardy of England LRH Lightweight Fly Fishing Reel Box Only
Not sure the vintage of this box. Surely pre-dates the 1960s. It measures 3 13/16" square& 2 9/16" high. There is some discoloration and staining, but the box is sound with no separation at the seams. Pre-dates my LRH, otherwise I'd keep it. This is the box ONLY.

FOR SALE: A HARDY BROS of ENGLAND MARQUIS 8/9 FLY REEL w/ EXTRA SPOOL. This is a Pre-Korean Hardy. Made in England. The Reel shows some wear(boat rash) on the cage, but is in otherwise Excellent Mechanical Condition. It features the Legendary Loud Click Drag, the rivets are all tight and there is zero end play on the spools. This reel comes with an Extra Spool and zippered case, but the 8 weight fly lines shown in the photos are not included. I will ship for free within the Continental U.S.

Hardy St. George 3" Fly Reel - 3 screw latch
Hardy St. George- 3" 3-screw latch. Curved writing prewar reel. Stamped JS fro Jimmy Smith a well known reel smith at Hardy. This is a very tight St. George that has been used and loved for many years. There is one repaired frame crack that can be seen in the photos. I don't know the provenance of the work but it's professional cleanness leads me to believe it may be a factory repair job. There is another very fine crack that I have shown in a close-up photo. The crack seems stable and has not changed at all since I have owned the reel which includes a fair amount of fishing time. There is a tiny bit of bend in the foot but it was not noticeable when I mounted the reel. The milky agate is clear with no cracks as far as I can tell. The flaws noted above do nothing to effect the fishability but do reduce it's collectibility. ... moreEven so this is a great example of a rare. Classic Sunbeam 8/9 single action. Spring and pawl, rim control fly reel made by Hardy Brothers of Alnwick, England. Mechanically very sound and tight- no spool or handle wobble. Smokey gray agate line guide is perfect- no chips or cracks. Surface finish dulling, rim wear, few small edge dings, scuffs etc. very typical for a used reel of this vintage. Former owner lightly scratched name and address into surface on reverse. I started to buff this out with the idea in mind to repaint ... morethe reel at some point but gave it up due to health problems. Weight- 6.0 ounces, 3 13/16 inches in diameter x 1 inch wide(excluding handle and drag knob) Most suitable for 7-10 weight lines/rods, capacity- WF9F plus 450 feet of 20lb Micron backing. Uniquely designed line guide that can easily be repositioned(wire retaining spring) for either right or left hand retrieve and even includes a Hardy logo"plug" to fill in the unused line guide hole. Reel can be fished with right or left hand retrieve by simply reversing the position of the line guide and plug and the click pawls. Large drag knob on reverse that regulates spring pressure on the click pawls. Very positive clicker sound sure to let everyone else on the lake or river know that you're into a good fish with a classic Hardy reel- what could be better? Includes a very nice padded, zippered generic cloth and cordura nylon reel pouch that fits but is very snug.
