This is a vintage postcard that wasn't mailed but is addressed and written on. It is from about 1910 and was published by O.E. Noyes. It shows a machine shop in Springfield. Vermont. The bottom corners are bent, otherwise it's okay. The message is interesting in that it says the railroad washed out below there. This will be more clear than the digital photo shows. Lamson Civil War one armed or Amputee fork
I don't know if this is Civil War Era but that was where these came from. When someone lost an arm, this was how they ate. I had a very old one of these that was hand made, this one is made in a factory and has a stainless steel blade with some kind of bone handle. You can see the layers in the handle and in the cross section you can see they go all the way thru. Maybe Horn or tusk or ivory, who knows. Has been sharpened, other than that it is in great shape.

These were used to carry a customer's bill& payment from the sales assistant to the cashier's office and carry the change and receipt back again. Paper money and bills/receipts would be clipped onto the bottom. Coins would be carried inside the wooden cup. The cast metal top with oxidized copper finish and 2 metal pulleys. We were, by 1890 ready to flex our naval influence to be present in the harbors of foreign trade countries to“protect” our commercial interests. And of course. These are a set of antique knife and fork made buy LAMSON& GOODNOW. They are made of steel with pewter end mounts. The handles look like they are carved from bone. But could be some other high quality material. The knife is 9-1/4" long and the fork is 7" They are sold in"as found" as is" condition. They came from an estate with other silver wear and antiques from the 1800's and early 1900's so by the style and surroundings they are probably well over 100 years old.

THE PAT DATE IS JULY 7TH 1891 BUT THE BUILDING WASN'T ERECTED UNTIL 1907 SO UNLESS THEY BROUGHT IT FROM ANOTHER BANK I DON'T THINK IT IS EARLIER THAN THAT. IT IS MISSING THE TOP TRAY. WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED THIS IT WAS DUSTY AND DIRTY BUT I DON'T REMEMBER IT BEING RUSTY UNTIL I MADE THE MISTAKE OF HOSING IT OFF AND LETTING IT AIR DRY. I THINK THAT CAUSED THE RUST.
