Pend. 8' 3 piece, 2 tips) 4-1/2 oz; 5 weight vintage bamboo fly rod This early patent pending Orvis Battenkill was made 02-24-1949 by George Reid and comes in the hard to find 3/2 format. A little background here regarding Orvis. Wesley(Wes) Jordan and the process of impregnating bamboo with resin as an improvement over varnished bamboo rods. Prior to the mid-1940's. Bamboo fly rods were protected with a coating of varnish. These fly rods required lots of maintenance(stripping and reapplication of varnish) due to the cracking and chipping of varnish caused by the natural flexing of the rod's action. Failure to maintain a bamboo fly rod protected with varnish often led to premature aging and rotting of exposed bamboo in affected areas. Wesley Jordan. Legendary rod builder at Cross Rod Company, South ... moreBend Rod Company and Orvis, creator of the screw-locking reel seat and beloved and innovative fly rod production manager at Orvis, is also credited as being the developer of the process of impregnating bamboo rods with resin to make them more duarable and weatherproof than varnished rods. This is actually an amazing story and achievement. At first. Wes Jordan worked with the Bakelite Company, who impregnated strips of bamboo at their facility and sent back to Orvis to be glued and assembled into a rod. This process proved to be a failed idea. Wes Jordan was determined to come up with a better way to accomplish this process. Through years of hard work. Determination, trial and error and experimentation, Wes Jordan finally found success with a process of splitting bamboo cane in half, drying and then tempering them over an open gas flame, then splitting them into several strips which were then glued back together with a phenolic resin-based cement. Next, the reconstructed bamboo shafts were impregnated with a Bakelite phenolic resin under controlled heat. After this, the shafts were cured in a temperature-controlled oven, allowing the pores in the bamboo to be filled completely

Earlier vintage Orvis Battenkill III single action. Spring and click pawl, fly reel made by Hardy Brothers of Alnwick, England. Reel is 3 1/4 inches in diameter by 1 1/8 inches wide(excluding handle and drag knob) This is one of the first reels Hardy made from a very tough and extremely light cast magnesium alloy. The reel is remarkably light weighing a mear 2.8 ounces- roughly 60% less than comparable Hardy reels cast from the more traditional aluminum alloy. Most suitable for 2 to 5 weight lines/rods. Reel ... morecan be fished with right or left hand retrieve by simply inverting the single click pawl. Minimal spool overrun and"drag" regulation may be applied via a plastic knob on the reverse which causes a steel leaf spring to exert varying pressure on a single click pawl. Wonderful clicker sound. Reel is in good used condition mechanically and cosmetically. Rivets and screws are tight and reel is in tight running order. Handle intact and free of cracks. Spool shows minimum wear. Internal parts are free of rust or corrosion. There is some surface rash on the back of the frame but nothing really obnoxious. Excellent compliment to a classic light weight bamboo fly rod. Includes very nice generic(not Orvis) zippered, padded cordura nylon reel pouch as a bonus- case not shown. VINTAGE ORVIS BATTENKILL FLY ROD - IMPREGNATED - S-18 - 8 1/2 foot
Here is a very unusual ORVIS BATTENKILL IMPREGNATED FLY ROD. This is an exceptional rod The serial number on both pieces to this 2 piece rod is S-18. I called the ORVIS headquarters in Manchester to help us identify this great rod. They believe the S is a symbol for one of the ORVIS fly fishing schools off of Cape Cod. Mass. They believe it to be pre 1970 This is an 8 1/2 foot rod. Also marked 5 1/8 OZ T B F(9) One eye on the rod end is a little different from the others but the taping to this eye is identical to the taping on the other eyes. Shows very little use wear. The metal end of the handle part of the rod where the tip attaches has a little discoloration from age or wear? It has been in our possession for over 35 years and we have never used it. I am selling my Orvis Battenkill Mark V Disc fly reel. My dad bought this new from Orvis directly and has used it over the years. The reel has cosmetic blemishes but functions quite well. It comes with a blue case. Has two extra spools. Two spools are loaded with backing& 1) WF Wet Cell Sinking 2) STS Shooting. 3) just backing. Bamboo fly rods were protected with a coating of varnish. These fly rods required lots of maintenance(stripping and reapplication of varnish) due to the cracking and chipping of varnish caused by the natural flexing of the rod's action. Failure to maintain a bamboo fly rod protected with varnish often led to premature aging and rotting of exposed bamboo in affected areas. Wesley Jordan. Orvis Battenkill Gun Case
Orvis Battenkill 52" Gun Case mint condition. Has spent most of its life indoors, only carried to the range 3 to 4 times. Made in USA of heavy canvas and leather trim, has tan leather straps in three places that were never used, but can be used to secure case to a saddle, backpack gear, or strap a second gun case on to this one and carry two guns with one shoulder strap. The current production Battenkill gun cases no longer offer these extra straps. What really sets Orvis Battenkill cases apart from other brands is the thickness of the acrylic shearling lining. Which offers extra protection and moisture resistance. I have never seen another soft case with as much padding. Look at the last pic. Which shows the engraved initials on the brass plate. The engraving is light and could possibly be removed from the brass plate with varying grades ... moreof sand paper. Another solution that I have used in the past is to have a trophy shop engrave your initials on a new brass plate of the same size and bore holes in the new plate that will fit over the rivet heads holding the old plate in place. Then rough up the back of the new plate and the front of the old plate with sand paper, then epoxy the new plate on top of the old. I have used JB Weld in the past, it is more of a paste than liquid and stays where you put it. You can clean uncured epoxy up with vinegar if you make a mistake. I used this method on a piece of vintage leather luggage with great results, new plate has been holding for over 10 years now. Also, make sure you get a solid brass plate, the extra cost is minimal.

If you are looking for a beautiful, chocolatey colored 60 year old Orvis that is ready to fish for another 60 years, then this is your rod. The original wraps were dried and cracked so it was re-wrapped in the correct#541 Gudebrod brown with three coats of varnish. The ferrules, winding check and tip tops were re-blued by the best man in the business- Dave Leclaire. They have a nice snug fit and the familiar pop when pulled apart. This is a sweet rod that deserves to be fished, as they cast 5 or 6 weights and are known to be great all-rounders for dry, wet and streamer fishing. For sale is a Sage Graphite III Model GFL-590-5LL Fly Rod and Orvis Battenkill Disc 5/6. I've fished this rod maybe a dozen times in the past 15 years. I just don't get out anymore. It's in great condition. No scratches or chips and comes with the original Sage tube sock and rod tube. Front and back the reel looks great and is loaded with Scientific Anglers' Ultra3 WF-5-F line. The spool edge has some light wear and it sounds real sweet! This is Sage's older Light Line Series. It has a lovely. Unhurried and slower action reminiscent of cane rods. Yet it can still punch out a big fly out. The rod and reel will be shipped separately. I have a heavy duty mailing tube. I'll pay shipping for the reel.

Though both the reel and the extra spool are classified as"used. there is very little evidence of very much use. A few nicks on the reel but very, very few. I doubt whether the extra spool has ever been used.
