ClicPic Gallery Software. Vintage Orvis Battenkill Mark IV single action. Spring and pawl, fly reel made by Hardy Brothers of Alnwick, England. Design is unlike anything previously or since produced by Hardy sold under their own name. Reel is 3 7/16 inches in diameter by 1 1/16 inches wide. Cast of a newly developed magnesium alloy the reel is extremely light weighing a mere 3.1 ounches- more than 30% lighter than comparible sized Hardy reels using traditional cast aluminum alloys. Most suitable for 5-7 weight rods. Reel is in good mechanical condition and has all its original parts with no loose rivets or screws. Cosmetically I would rate this reel as just fair to good- it has obviously been well used. Unfortunately, the finish Hardy used plagued this series of reels during its entire production. Reel can be fished with right or left hand retrieve by simply inverting the single click pawl and reversing the single screw, double prong chromium line guard. Minimal"drag" may be applied via a plastic knob on the reverse which works on a spring that regulates the pressure on the single click pawl. Terrific clicking sound. Includes extra spool plus original vinyl reel case both in reasonable decent condition- there is no foam insert in the case. Former owner's name and phone number scratched into bottom of reel foot. Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot. However. Very nice classic Orvis click and pawl fly reel with a 6wt sinking line. Some small superficial scratches and a few small dings. As shown in the last picture the reel rubs a little on the inside of the spool. It is not really noticeable when fishing. But it is there when I am moving the spool slowly in my living room. I’m not sure how these are dated, but my assumption is it was made somewhere between 1965-1970. Weighs a little under 4 1/2” oz. with a nylon click drag. The original catalog said that it would take up to a 8 wt. line, I would assume 5/6/7 weight lines would perform best. This reel is used. With several scratches and chips to the paint. Orvis CFO II (2) Fly Reel Click and Pawl Drag Made in England
Up for auction is a classic CFO II(2) click and pawl with a leather case(I don't think its the original leather case) with rivets. The reel is already loaded with backing and 1 wt line. The numbering on the reel looks like a III but is actually a CFO II(2) based on the measurement of the diameter on the spool(see picture 12 from ad in a 1975 Orvis Catalogue) This reel was made in England by Hardy. This reel has been used and still has a lot of life left in it. As you can in the pictures there is a piece of metal missing in the spool(picture 7) This spool is rubbing a on the frame as you can see in pictures 10 and 11. Despite the dent and the spool rubbing the frame the reel still functions and the spindle does not appear to be warped or bent.
